Musical History of Scots-Irish Immigration to the United States
brimcrow24 September 2006
Perhaps "On Eagle's Wing" is not an historically accurate account of the actual Scots-Irish migration to the United States - nor does it purport to be. It claims to be a multi-layered musical based loosely on history. On that level it succeeds remarkably. The music, the singing, the dancing, the acting, all come together in a lavish, beautifully staged and choreographed two or so hours that will leave you breathless - but happy. In a word - fantastic!

There will be additional productions of this fine musical, but make sure you see this one first. The others will pale by comparison. This rare musical (I hesitate to call it that because it succeeds on so many non-musical levels) was a pleasant gift to America courtesy of WLIW, Garden City, New York and Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). I'm not here to bang the drum for Public Television. I'm here to tell you about "On Eagle's Wing". Thing is - without WLIW and PBS we might never have known it even existed!

I think that On Eagles Wing was really something incredible. I would highly recommend that you go and see it. For it is a truly unique and spectacular performance. It blew me away. The dancing was amazing, and exciting. It was very well choreographed and incorporated lots of different styles of dance to reflect the different cultures. I would also love to see this show tour the world. There is no doubt in my mind that it is good enough. I really feel we should embrace this show, and be very proud of it, as it is a masterpiece. It really is amazing. The songs in the show are so beautiful. 'Where eagles fly' is such a poignant, incredibly powerful song. I really did love all the songs, such variation. It really is a fabulous stage show.

Superbly acted and historically correct piece of work.

Fantastic, and insightful. I saw the world premier of this and was totally blown away. The acting was top notch and the story could be verified at any point in the production. Men in kilts aren't effeminate (since when I ponder). It gets a good rating from me,for the superb acting.

George Jones was on top form, really proving once again what a fantastic actor/personality he is.

As far as I can see this play should have traveled the world and would have won numerous accolades.

Top marks.

First, I must reiterate that I am no relation whatsoever to anyone involved in the production of 'On Eagles Wing'. I have watched this musical 17 times on DVD and every time I watch it, it gets better. How this musical did not do as well as Riverdance, I cannot comprehend. Being a Catholic growing up in Northern Ireland, a few scenes in the production had sharp edges. The Lambeg Drum and the siege of Derry are dark shadows that still dwell across the wall of our past. However, history is history and this musical played it very well. What some of my Catholic friends failed to realise, this is our journey too. Like myself, a great number of us can trace our ancestry to Scotland. Nationalist and Unionist share similar surnames, and, in the past, their ancestors would have shared common goals and beliefs. 'On Eagles Wing', through song and dance, pushes back the cobwebs of history and allows us to stare into the eye of a perfect storm. That storm being the Scots-Irish blowing across every corner of what today is called The United States to share the richness of their culture and perseverance. The American war of Independence give birth to a nation that would open its arms to those seeking a 'better life'. Comedy integrated with tragedy, undiluted courage, and a steadfast Christian faith carry the Scots-Irish through centuries of an ever-changing America. This musical is steeped in ancestral evolution, it fills the air with clear vibrant vocals and both Alyth McCormack and Peter Corry gallantly pick up the gauntlet. 'On Eagles Wing' not only portrays the monumental talent and explicit vision that congregated to give life to a wonderful story, it also brings us closer to understanding, 'Who we really are'.

Every member of the cast warrants an Oscar in their own right, but the writer and producer John Anderson truly deserves the golden crown. Those of us who know little of the entertainment industry cannot begin to imagine what effort and raw, undaunted persistence it took to put a show of this magnitude on the stage. I can only pray that 'On Eagles Wing' rises from the ashes once again and covers the stages of the whole wide world with what it truly deserves.

Highly recommended! The stage show supplies the missing history of the earlier ScotsIrish into America. Wonderfully performed!

An Absolute Turkey

I can only assume that the 10/10 reviews are from family/friends of the cast or producers. This monstrosity is almost worth watching to experience how bad "entertainment" can be.
