Go Shibata makes strange films based on challenging premises filled with incredible (read: inspired) music and we love him for it. In 2004 (2009 in the States) we got Late Bloomer, which told the story of a serial killer with cerebral palsey. The movie became a cult sensation all while it's disturbing self languished in distribution red tape. Thankfully, Shibata's most recent film, Doman Seman, carries the torch of where he left off, although possibly a little lower than before. It's hard to say, however, because frankly, and I must admit cheerfully, I'm still not sure just what Doman Seman is!
Here's what I do know: Doman Seman is a punk cluster funk of knotted tones and obliterated semiotic conventions, and is one of the weirder narrative experiences I've had to sit through in my day.

[Doman Seman screens July 5th and 7th at the Lincoln Center with director Go Shibata in attendance.]
For fans of out-there cinema, especially of the anything-goes Asian variety, Gô Shibata's new film presents something of a conundrum: it's wild, wacky, subversive-minded, undeniably experimental, and often innovative... yet feels, paradoxically, excruciatingly conventional. In short, I've rarely seen a film with such radical aesthetics, not to mention politics, that's nonetheless so humdrum. How did this happen?
Expectations run high for Doman Seman largely on the strength of Shibata's stunning alt-serial killer film Late Bloomer, which featured a disabled protagonist but managed to be anything but gimmicky. Walking a fine line between chilly objectivity and intimate subjectivity, Late Bloomer used a wide range of filmmaking devices opportunistically in order to underscore its central question: can we ever really understand what drives someone like this?
Doman Seman takes a similar kitchen-sink approach to the stylistic tropes it's willing to employ but the results never provide a sense of the form-follows-function elegance of the earlier film.

And the winner for film I most want to see is Gô Shibata's Doman Senman which I hear is incredibly weird. This is the same guy who did the serial killer with cerebral palsy flick Late Bloomer (Osoi Hito).
Other notable films include Merantau, the world premier of Alien vs Ninja, Mutant Girls Squad and Hitoshi Matsumoto's Symbol which I'm also dying to see.
The festival runs from June 25th to July 8th, and you can hit the Nyaff website right here.
Full lineup after the break.
Official Opening Night Film
IP Man 2 (Hong Kong, 2010, North American Premiere) - Sammo Hung and Donnie
Yen throw down in this lavish martial arts flick that blew the Hong Kong box
office wide open and beat Iron Man 2 like a redheaded stepchild.
***The movie's star and action choreographer, Sammo Hung, will be present.

That's right, from the mind which brought us the incredible Late Bloomer (Osoi Hito), an experimental film about a serial killer who is severely handicapped with cerebral palsy, comes a tale of the supernatural which is set to premier at the Tokyo Filmex. While very few details have emerged, we do have a brief synopsis from ryuganji:
Freeloader Shinsuke meets homeless Tsutomu & gets caught up in strange events when a battle erupts between supernatural beings.
Hopefully, it will be heavily experimental like Osoi Hito. More as it comes!

“It is impossible to know what is going on in the mind of someone who is always smiling…” This is the tagline and central idea behind Go Shibata’s Late Bloomer. Out on DVD this week (3/24/2009), the film centers on Sumida (Masakiyo Sumida), a severely handicapped man tended to by several caregivers. Despite his condition, Sumida still consumes beer with rock star Take (Naozo Hotta) and watches porn that he keeps hidden away. He even attends Take’s screaming hardcore metal concerts and gets drunk by himself. But when college student Nobuko (Mari Torii) decides to assist Sumida for her thesis, she doesn’t realize just how much of an impact she’ll have on him. Sumida finds himself deeply in love with the girl, expressing his feelings to his disabled friend Fukunaga (Toshihisa Fukanaga).
While this sounds more like a dramatic romance than a horror film, there’s more to the plot.

Among the standout's are Jt Petty's The Burrowers and the much sought after The Good, The Bad, The Weird. Also playing is Pieter Van Hees Linkeroever , and I actually got my copy of the film just last week so we'll be having a review soon. There's also a couple of films we already have reviews for, Ole Bornedal's Just another Love story and Gô Shibata’s incredible experimental film about a serial killer with cerebral palsy called Late Bloomer. Check out the full lineup after the break!

Gô Shibata’s controversial 2004 film The Late Bloomer (Osoi Hito) appeared on the festival circuit a few years ago to much acclaim but subsequently disappeared. Now, in 2008, the film is on its way back into the public conversation with recent screenings in New York and an imminent North American DVD release by Tidepoint Pictures. Similarly themed films have both preceded (Chang-dong Lee’s Oasis) and followed (Crispin Glover’s It Is Fine. Everything Is Fine!) Shibata’s work but this does not really matter. There is no adequate cinematic frame of reference for the way in which The Late Bloomer explores disability and the frailty of the human body.

I first saw "The Late Bloomer" at the Filmex festi val in Tokyo in 2005. I can't say I enjoyed the film, but I appreciated it, and it stayed in my memory.
Opening today at the Pioneer, "Bloomer" is the sordid story of Sumida, a severely handicapped young Japanese man.
He makes the best of a bum life - partying, drinking beer and going to concerts by his caregiver Take's hardcore band.
Then, college student Nobuko agrees to help care for Sumida to gather information for her thesis. He is consumed by passion for the woman; and when she starts taking notice of Take,...
