Magic show for kids
jonesy74-18 October 2005
I was only about five years old when I watched this show. Mark Wilson was the epitome of a magician to me. My memories of this show are a bit hazy, but I seem to remember an audience of kids watching Mark and his lovely wife, Nani Darnell, perform their act.

This was before magic became such an adult, Vegas-type attraction (and before magicians started revealing the secrets of how their tricks were done). Mark Wilson is considered one of the greats, though. He would load Nani in a box and stick swords through it. He would suspend her in mid-air and pass hoops around her.

I remember Rebo the Clown (Bev Bergeron) as looking like the clown on the box for ice cream cone cups.

The show must have had some connection with Hannah-Barbera, as there were cartoon spots shown on it. In particular, I remember a "Pixie and Dixie" cartoon on one of the Alakazam shows I watched. I guess it kept kids watching.

I really enjoyed this show. There was something happening all the time that kept your interest. Mark Wilson seemed very friendly to kids.

It claimed to be fun for everyone, and I guess it was

I understand that the original full-scale Huckleberry Hound show was a syndicated program, not a network program, and that the individual Huck Hound cartoons shown on MAGIC LAND via the magic wishing hat ("And when Rebo goes 'alakazatt,' look in the magic wishing hat") were having their first network showings, thanks to Kellogg's which sponsored both programs. What with the kiddie cartoons, the magic, and the statuesque Nani Darnell-- Mark Wilson's wife and assistant-- in very thigh-high tights, I guess the show was "fun for everyone," as the opening theme song claimed. Inside Rebo's clown suit was a man named Bev Bergeron, a magician in his own right. "Laugh at Rebo the mixed-up clown," said the theme, but I remember him as more of a sidekick and less of a buffoon.
