A private detective with a passion for disco tries to clean up the streets of Kolkata in a documentary like no other.
There's no shortage of interesting documentary subjects in the world but it's rare for a team to hit gold like this. The Bengali Detective has all the makings of a Hollywood classic - action, mystery, dance, romance and heartbreaking personal tragedy. At its heart is Rajesh Ji, one of the most charming, unselfconscious heroes to grace our screens for a decade, and it's set against the vibrant background of Kolkata in a period of rapid economic and social...

The florist who survived San Francisco's Aids epidemic, a triumph for Iranian cinema, and a lifetime achievement gong for Stephen Frears
He's still there
One of the most charismatic characters I've seen all year is in the wistful documentary We Were Here. The film, directed by David Weissman, looks back at how the Aids epidemic swept through San Francisco's gay community in the early 1980s. The story is told through the testimonies of a few survivors, people who were in the city's Castro neighbourhood, before the "gay plague" hit, and are still there now. One such man is Guy Clark, an African American who came to San Francisco in the mid-70s and set up a flower stall on the corner of Castro Street.
Sadly, his blooms became used for thousands of funerals during the worst years of the epidemic, but he himself lives to tell many stories in this very fine documentary.

Stephen Frears recently finished production on his follow to up last year’s Tamara Drewe, Lay the Favorite, so, with this latest news, it could be said he’s is maintaining a pretty steady pace. As Variety reports, the Queen helmer will next work on The Bengali Detective, an adaptation of Philip Cox‘s documentary that debuted just this year. Frears‘ Favorite and High Fidelity scribe D.V. DeVincentis will pen the adaptation; Ridley and Tony Scott will produce through Scott Free Productions.
The original documentary focused on “modern India through the eyes of an unlikely hero,” the protagonist being “intrepid private eye Rajesh Ji as he explores Calcutta’s criminal underworld while pursuing his dream to dance on Indian TV.” I initially cringed a bit at the description, if only because it sounds as though there’s potential for the fake indie fare Fox Searchlight would snatch up in a heartbeat — and,...

A documentary based on the life of a Kolkata based private detective Rajesh Ji titled Bengali Detective, directed by Philip Cox, had created quite a stir in the film festival circuit and Fox Searchlight, the parent company of Fox Star Studios, India, had bought its feature film remaking rights at Sundance 2011. The news is that Fox Searchlight has handed over the direction duties of the proposed feature film to the British director Stephen Frears who has won Oscar nomina...

Jai Ho? This actually sounds fun. Variety is reporting that Fox Searchlight has lined up acclaimed British director Stephen Frears and screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis, who made High Fidelity (2000) together and are working on Lay the Favorite next, to direct & write the English-language version of The Bengali Detective. A few may remember hearing about this pick-up at Sundance earlier this year, with Searchlight nabbing the "remake" rights, or adaptation rights, as it's a documentary about a real private eye in Calcutta named Rajesh Ji who takes on the criminal underworld while pursuing his dream of dancing on Indian TV. There are already numerous comparisons to Slumdog Millionaire out there, which is fine considering the studio behind it, but I expect this to be something else entirely, as that was mostly a Danny Boyle creation. Frears' recent work has included some milder fare like Tamara Drewe, Chéri and The Queen, though ...

Durham, N.C. - During lunch a filmmaker tells me that of all the festivals he’s attended with his movies, the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is the only one he wants to attend as a spectator. He enjoys how the various screens and activities aren’t spread all over the city. There’s a relaxed atmosphere as the festival-goers aren’t hustling hard to get tickets to sold out screenings. It’s a sweet Southern festival in the middle of Tobacco Road. Even the world’s biggest superstar just hangs out with the festival goers inside of hiding behind a wall of security.
Who is the superstar? Elmo! And we have an exclusive chat with him at the end of this column.
The film selection was once more top notch. An ample number of documentaries received their world debut in Durham. There were a few films that had built a buzz at Sundance,...

Chicago – An overarching feeling of optimism seemed to permeate throughout the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Studios purchased the distribution rights to roughly 30 movies, nearly double the number of films that sold last year. Several of the festival’s most buzzed-about discoveries could easily find a sizable audience outside of the festival circuit, either in theaters or on VOD.
Paramount and Indian Paintbrush certainly appeared confident in their purchase of “Like Crazy,” the latest film from “Douchebag” director Drake Doremus, which flew under nearly everyone’s radar before claiming the festival’s top prize. It follows a young couple, played by Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, as they attempt to maintain a long distance relationship between America and Britain. The largely improvised film has already been compared to bittersweet romances such as “Before Sunrise” and “Blue Valentine.” Jones is quickly emerging as an actress to watch, a fact solidified by the special...

After her other, more acclaimed Sundance movie Martha Marcy May Marlene got picked up yesterday, Elizabeth Olsen is getting a second chance to infiltrate theaters sometime this year. THR tells us that her horror film Silent House has been picked up by Liddell Entertainment, who has acquired the domestic and most of the international rights for the film. They’re said to be considering giving the domestic rights to an American distributor, with Lionsgate having an interest. Directed by Open Water helmers Chris Kentis and Laura Lau, with a script by Lau, it’s a remake of last year’s Uruguayan film La Casa Muda. Shot in one (supposed) take, the movie was a midnight premiere on Thursday, and was not well received by members of the site who saw it. Still, horror has a wide reach, so its no surprise to see this get picked up.

First, Fox Searchlight has made their latest purchase from the Sundance Film Festival, and have picked up remake rights to Philip Cox’s The Bengali Detective. The original film is a feature documentary, that looks at the criminal underworld of Calcutta, through the eyes of private investigator Rajesh Ji. The film doesn’t quite sound like a Searchlight feature, but then toss in the fact that Rajesh has aspirations of dancing on Indian TV, and you see why the impeccably quirky studio has reached out and nabbed this picture. It sounds immensely entertaining, so this is one I definitely can’t wait to check out, and one remake that I’m actually quite interested in seeing.

The strangest thing about Philip Cox's Sundance selected documentary The Bengali Detective? It's all true. This story of an Indian private eye who has formed a dance troupe with his employees seems like the sort of thing created for cult filmdom but nope. It's all legit.
The secrets of Kolkata's citizens are revealed by charismatic, dance obsessed, intrepid detective Rajesh Ji. Mixing the suspense and intrigue of his investigations with dances and songs, this originally styled documentary provides an entertaining and poignant look into the realities of modern India.
The documentary screening at the festival is part of a larger web series backed by Babelgum and you can see the trailer below.

Karunaas has been holding special mention for sharing good rapport with his co-stars, especially the newcomers. Master Shankar has more reasons to call him his brother not only in the film ‘Ambasamudarm Ambani’, but also in real life as well. It’s all because the actor has encouraged him to come up with best performance.
Master Shankar came to Chennai joining the office of Bhagyaraj as an assistant and with his recommendation made his debut in Ajith Kumar’s ‘Ji’. Bhagyaraj personally recommended Lingusamy to offer him some role. Following this film, he acted in various films - ‘Vallavan’, ‘Indiralogathil Na. Azhagappan’, ‘Kuselan’ and in around 24 films. The Ambasamudaram Ambani is a special film for Master Shankar as he has completed 25 films with this one.
At this special moment, Master Shankar thanks his mentor Bhagyaraj for reviving his life and Karunaas, who offered him a meaty role in his recent release.
