Alfonso's last gift to Billy is a TV set which can allow him to step inside what he's watching. When Billy, perturbed by what then happens, asks where the set is, Alfonso replies "Why, Billy Webb, this is the set, nor are we out of it." This echoes Christopher Marlowe's "Doctor Faustus": Faustus asks Mephostophilis how he has escaped from Hell, and the spirit replies, "Why, this is Hell, nor am I out of it". Like Mephostophilis, Alfonso has the power to grant wishes and his true nature only gradually becomes obvious.
