Most of today’s horror fans are very aware of Sid Haig and his role as the notorious Captain Spaulding in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses (2003) and The Devil’s Rejects (2005). But what many fans aren’t aware of is that Sid Haig’s career dates back to 1960 with over 60 film and over 350 television appearances. He’s been in the business for over 50 years and has worked with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Lon Chaney Jr., Omar Sharif, Sean Connery, George Lucas, and Quentin Tarantino. Haig started making a name for himself while working with director Jack Hill in his exploitation films such as Spider Baby (1968), Pit Stop (1969), The Big Doll House (1971), and The Big Bird Cage (1972). He continued working in Hollywood in a variety of villainous roles including Diamonds are Forever (1971), Coffy (1973), Foxy Brown (1974), Savage Sisters (1974), Jackie Brown (1997), and Kill Bill vol.

Earlier, we posted a review of the action comedy Dust Up, a neo-western with shades of Quentin Tarantino, Sergio Leone, and Grindhouse films. The film was written and directed by Ward Roberts (Little Big Top), and can be found on VOD and PPV, and has been out since October and November. What follows is FM’s interview with Ward: our discussion about his influences, his hilarious cast, the case of the missing miniature pony, and the tenacity it takes to be an independent filmmaker.
Read our rave review here and be sure to check it out on VOD.
FM: I always ask this because I’m always curious. What kinds of films, or TV, or books did you grow up on? What inspired you to become a filmmaker?
Ward Roberts: You know, I would say, watching Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman, those are my very earliest cinematic influences.

Stepping a little out of character here to let people in the La area know about a special screening taking place this week of Sid Haig's movie Little Big Top. Simply put Little Big Top is an amazing film, and Haig's performance as a down on his luck clown is alternately heartwarming and hilarious.
It will be playing this Tuesday, March 31, at 9:30 pm at the legendary New Beverly Cinema as part of "Sid Haig Week". The opening feature that night will be the Jack Hill classic Pit Stop. Haig himself will be on hand to introduce and participate in Q&A's before and after each feature.
"Sid Haig stars as Seymour Smiles, an old circus clown and current drunk, who returns to his small Indiana hometown to live the rest of his days boozing in solitude. But when his childhood friend Bob (Richard Riehle) convinces him to help...

We all love the Captain. I'd be hard pressed to come up with another genre actor still working within the biz that has had a crazier career than Sid Haig. The man has worked with everyone from Lon Chaney to Rob Zombie, and come tomorrow evening -- the devil will be getting his due!
From the Press Release:

With the nation mired in an economic crisis rivaled only by the Great Depression, a seemingly endless and increasingly unpopular war -- both of which are taking a devastating toll on the pocketbooks, morale and the very psyche of nearly every American -- and a myriad of domestic troubles ranging from health care and the environment to energy and the erosion of personal freedom, interest in the in the upcoming presidential election, now only days away, is at a virtually unprecedented high.
Never before in the history of the United States has the fate of the nation and indeed the literal survival of the republic seemed to hang so precariously in the balance. For at least the last forty years and particularly in the case of the last two or three presidential races, the most commonly uttered phrase on the tongues of voters faced with hard choices and their sense...
