For its time, this is a pleasant and rather clever movie. It's really only mildly amusing now, but it holds a couple of points of interest. The technique is a little uneven, featuring at least one resourceful turn, but also some rough edges.
The setup has a romantic rivalry that leads to an unusual race, with a horse pitted against an automobile. The idea was quite topical at the time, and a horse would also have been an even match for a motorcar in 1904. The idea also gives it some interest now, as a glimpse at the implicit tensions between the new motorized vehicles and the time-honored horse.
The race sequence is also of some interest for the camera trick of recycling the same stretch of scenery in order to extend the race scene. The technique is an easy one to spot, but it still shows some degree of resourcefulness. At other times, though, the composition is awkward, losing some significant detail around the edges of the camera field.
There's not a lot to it, but it has a light-hearted tone, and it ends with a good gag. It's not one of the best movies of its time, but it's worth seeing.
