As a follow up to 2006's critically acclaimed Small Engine Repair, Irish director Niall Heery brings us Gold, an offbeat comedy that expertly straddles the fine line between the humourous and tragic. Our story kicks off when Ray (David Wilmot) returns to his home town, after years dealing with depression. Wanting to reconnect with his wife Alice (Kerry Condon), who has moved on from Ray with his former Pe teacher Frank (James Nesbitt), and teenage daughter Abbie (Maisie Williams), he inserts himself into their new life, setting in motion a chain of events that will have huge consequences for them all. It's a simple story, from a script written by Heery and his brother Brendan, but one that is brought to life with a massive amount of charm, and is both heart warming and heart breaking at the same time. It's shot through with a veneer you would more associate with American indie films,...

Los Angeles theaters are gaining prestige and exposure for some of their actors by mounting shows in New York, but profits remain elusive. SoCal theaters ranging from the Geffen Playhouse to the 99-seat Rogue Machine Theatre have recently staged productions in Manhattan. One thing the companies noticed was that the perception of L.A. theater as merely an actor’s showcase (as opposed to a cultural venture) has faded. “I know there was a bias there—‘Oh, you’re from L.A.’—and some people still think that, but they’re idiots. That has changed,” said John Pollono, a playwright and actor with Rogue Machine. “I think that there’s not that prejudice anymore.” Pollono’s play, “Small Engine Repair,” is at the tail end of a successful Off-Broadway run at McC Theater. Rogue Machine didn’t have the budget to mount the play independently in New York—that would...

After three years on the boards, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark has decided to call it quits on Jan. 5 after a tumultuous, headline-grabbing ride on Broadway that will result in a reported $60 million loss. Will producers be leery of investing in the next wave of in-development super-musicals (including a buzzed-about King Kong that is eyeing New York after a successful run in Melbourne). Meanwhile, this week’s openings are significantly less costly, including Ethan Hawke’s first Shakespeare turn on Broadway in 10 years, Tony winner Jefferson Mays in an eight-role bonanza, a first-time play by actress Amanda Peet with some heavy-hitting leads,...

The initial bloom of love being acted out each night in”First Date” just got handed an expiration date. The relationship musical will end its Broadway run on January 5, 2014, having played 34 previews and 174 regular performances. The show received mixed reviews, with some praising the buoyant score and performance by “Chuck” star Zachary Levi, while others decried a sitcom-like plot. New York Times critic Charles Isherwood offered a rather brutal assessment when he wrote, “A more appropriate title for ‘First Date’ would be ‘Last Rites.’” Also read: ‘Small Engine Repair’ Star on the Dark Side of Social Media: ‘It’s Just.

“Small Engine Repair” is a thriller for the social media age. John Pollono’s play unfolds in a decidedly low-tech environment, an oil-specked repair shop, but the four men who gather there are spurred into immoral action by the internet. “It undermines our empathy,” James Ransone, the actor best known for playing “Ziggy” Sobotka on “The Wire” and one of the play’s stars, said of social media. “There’s now a platform for all the inside thoughts we’ve always had and it’s become toxic. You look on a message board or you read a Tweet, and it’s just hate everywhere.

Add cast member James Ransone to the list of TV watchers who were underwhelmed by AMC’s crime drama “Low Winter Sun.” “It wasn’t a good show,” Ransone told TheWrap. “I had higher expectations going in. Approximately 18 productions of Shakespeare are taking place in New York this season. Sure, every actor wants to play Hamlet at least once, but who is today’s Shakespeare? And wouldn’t it be more fun to play a role that no one else has attempted? “Shakespeare’s great, but he was really written for the time period he was in. New plays are reflective of the age that we live in, and it’s sort of the reason the art has persisted the way it has,” says John Pollono, who wrote and stars in “Small Engine Repair,” which is playing at McC Theater. “If you’re doing a classic play that has been done 500 times, you already know it works, so there’s a safety in that. Remove that safety element and have some balls.” A few actors and writers are exercising their balls this season. Pulitzer Prize winner Bruce Norris has a new play,...

On October 30, Keegan Allen will make his NYC stage debut in the McC Theater production of Small Engine Repair, and he has one big favor to ask from his young Pretty Little Liars fans: don't buy a ticket. Now, before you get it twisted, know that Keegan is beyond proud of the play, but its adult themes and graphic language are geared for a more mature audience.
In Small Engine Repair, he plays Chad, a privileged college jock who turns up at an out-of-the-way repair shop and sets off an explosion of resentment among the three former high school buddies who regularly meet there under shady circumstances.
I caught up with Keegan to find out why he wanted this play to be his stage debut, why its message is more important than ever and how Small Engine Repair is indicative of the career choices he plans to keep making.

Don’t bother trying to convince James Badge Dale that there’s a cabal of Badge-ers out there, admirers from his days on 24 and HBO’s The Pacific who are committed to finally making him a household name. The 35-year-old New Yorker may have had notable supporting turns in three big summer movies, but he’s not one to get worked up over such chatter. “People chirp in your ears a lot,” he says. “They tell you, ‘This is going to do this for you, this is going to do that for you.’ I’ve had 10 years of that filtered into my head.

A "Pretty Little Liars" hunk is leaving Rosewood for a bit to make his stage debut -- but he's taking the mystery and secrets with him.
Keegan Allen, who portrays Toby on the ABC Family drama, is set to make his professional stage debut this fall in McC Theater's off-Broadway production of "Small Engine Repair," EW reports.
Allen's character is a college kid who shows up at a repair shop and sets off an "explosion of resentment among the three former high school buddies who regularly meet there under shady circumstances." Allen joins previously cast James Badge Dale ("World War Z") and James Ransone ("The Wire") as the other two buddies, as well as actor/playwright John Pollono (who also wrote the script).
