Successful Paul Thomas experiment
lor_10 August 2016
The Behind the Scenes featurette on the DVD of "Resident Sex" is quite educational: we see Paul Thomas directing the feature and crew refers to him as "PT" and also "Chuck Lords". This verifies what I suspected, that Lords is merely another pseudonym used by Thomas, for which I'm filing an IMDb edit to merge the credits, adding over 50 credits to PT's already voluminous resume.

Thomas explains in the BTS that between big-budget Vivid assignments he likes to shoot these improvised efforts, where the stress is on spontaneity. "Resident Sex" provides a template for such projects, as it presents a film within a film as we watch a porn project being shot, so the crew and equipment is visible on screen, simplifying the logistics of making the overall feature.

Monique Alexander comes to a mansion in search of the owner. Through a series of believable mistaken identity happenstances, she is mistaken for talent (quite believable given MA's beauty, quite early in her career), and eventually made-up, handed a release form to sign and pressed into hardcore sex action.

That's the entire story hook, but PT's craftsmanship and ingenuity prevent this from being just another of hundreds of thousands of all-sex ventures. There is actually an element of suspense maintained and a satisfying, light-hearted surprise ending.

Along the way, Selena Silver shines as a mysterious blonde who provides anal sex to the content; Trent Tesoro is effective as the mansion owner; Vivid producer Shylar Cobi, also fulfilling his usual production manager function, is cast as the pith-helmet wearing director of the film within a film, and various porn studs do their condom-laden thing. Monique is fresh and alluring, and can be forgiven stepping out of character at times due to the improv structure.

Steadicam work is a key to the project's success, used functionally rather than in the now too-familiar "let's imitate Scorsese (re "Goodfellas" especially)" mode that so many untalented contemporary mainstream directors adopt. I've only watched a couple of "Chuck Lords" videos so far, but look forward to this potential treasure trove of footnotes to PT's illustrious XXX career.
