Awkward construction
deickemeyer21 April 2018
There are popular elements in this two-part special, but awkward construction keeps it from being effective as a whole. Besides the popular appeal in such situations as the mother's denying her own heart its affection (it isn't made to seem a very worthy affection) in order that her little daughter can grow up in a better atmosphere than that to which she has been used, there are many scenes that are pretty in themselves. We daren't call the whole better than fair. - The Moving Picture World, January 31, 1914
