Shortly after Cally, Gan and Vila are also taken captive and forced to work in the mines. Avon decides to leave the crew on Horizon and take control of the Liberator, but instead, teleports to the surface to rescue them.—Daniel Williamson
- At the rim of the galaxy, with the crew tired and stressed, Liberator encounters a freighter en route to a mysterious planet called Horizon. Zen can find no information on Horizon, other than that a freighter visits it once a year, so they decide to follow and almost immediately encounter a magnetic barrier that does not affect the freighter, but shakes the Liberator up.
The freighter lands and Blake (Gareth Thomas) teleports down with Jenna (Sally Knyvette). They are observed through hidden surveillance devices. They find mines there but are promptly captured. Gan (David Jackson) and Vila (Michael Keating) decide to investigate when they don't report back. Blake and Jenna wake to interrogation by Ro (Darien Angadi), who says he rules the planet. He manages to extract Blake's name. As soon as Gan and Vila arrive they too are captured.
Ro has other visitors. A Federation Commissar (William Squire) and his Assistant (Brian Miller), who was Ro's former tutor, decide to interrogate Blake themselves, using a disorientor. Blake attempts to get Ro to send the two Federation men home, but Ro reveals that his people mine monophasium for the Federation. It is revealed that Ro is a native of the planet educated by the Federation. Blake tries to convince him that the Federation will just use him while it suits them. Alone with them Ro shows some signs of humanity. He feels he is helping his people improve their situation.
When the Federation representatives return they suggest putting Blake and Jenna to work in the mines. The same with Vila and Gan.
Zen deduces that the freighter was a prison ship and while Avon is tempted to leave, Cally (Jan Chappell) insists on teleporting down. She is teleported down, captured, and during interrogation reads the minds of the Federation men and reveals that they killed Ro's father. She telepathically warns Ro that they will kill him too if he does not continue to obey them. Ro has an affection for Selma (Souad Faress), a girl of his people that has already had trouble with the Federation. Avon (Paul Darrow) is now the only human left on board and toys with the idea of leaving the others to their fate.
Blake asks that the Federation take him alone and leave the rest of the crew but Ro has him sent back to the mines. The Commisar and his Assistant then request help from the Federation to intervene as they consider Ro has become unreliable. The Liberator's computer Zen intercepts their message, and a return message telling them to expect a ship in two hours. It was the only ship to get the message, and was unable to relay it. Avon forgets all ideas of leaving and teleports down. Unlike the others he spots the surveillance devices and destroys them. He finds Blake and the others.
Selma warns Ro that all electronic communication has been shut down, and they should get help and teleport bracelets from Blake. Ro tells her to go herself, but she is captured by the Commisar and his Assistant, who confront Ro with her. They tell him to show loyalty by instructing her to help them. Under duress, he agrees. They interrogate her. This is too much for Ro.
Ro then decides to resist the Federation. Blake helps. They confront and are forced to kill the Commisar and his Assistant. When the Federation ship arrives immediately after it is destroyed. Horizon is thus left at the end of the episode able to reshape it's own immediate future.
