- The Liberator is lured to Obsidian, a volcanic planet of strategic value, which is rumoured to have been recently visited by Blake. Dayna knows of a potential ally among the pacifist population: its ruler, an old acquaintance of her father named Hower.
Tarrant and Dayna teleport down in an attempt to enlist recruits to their rebellion, and to establish a base from which to complete the destruction of the Federation, and to defeat Servalan. However, Servalan has enlisted a traitor, Hower's son, Bershar, who is appalled by his people's conditioned pacifism. Bershar has decided that an alliance with Servalan is the planet's best hope for survival.
A complicated three-pronged trap unfolds involving Servalan's troops, her space battle fleet (hidden from the Liberator), and the people of Obsidian (called "Pyroans"). The Pyroans have banned aggression amongst their populace, and use mental conditioning from birth to eliminate all so-called "animal" or violent feelings. To ensure that they remain at liberty, the Pyroans deter any hostile landings on Obsidian by means of the ultimate "defence" - a bomb in the heart of the planet that can destroy the entire world.
Bershar betrays Tarrant and Dayna, giving teleport access to the Liberator for Servalan's commander (Mori) and his troops. During the space battle between Servalan's fleet and the Liberator, Mori briefly captures the ship and Avon is injured. Avon and Vila eventually regain control of the ship, but Commander Mori escapes, taking Cally and Orac down to Obsidian as his prisoners. The Federation fleet is beaten off, temporarily. Mori hides near a volcano to await Servalan's return.
On Obsidian, Hower becomes aware of his son's treachery and has him killed, freeing Tarrant and Dayna and allowing them to find and defeat Mori, and to save Cally and Orac. As Servalan's fleet returns to attack the planet, Hower advises the Liberator crew to depart - and sets off his planet-destroying bomb, sacrificing his people to avoid Federation invasion and occupation. Servalan decides capturing the Liberator must wait for another day, and returns to Space Command HQ.
