- Jack Bauer: [talking privately] What's the location of the nuclear football?
- Audrey Raines: Forty miles east of her in the middle of the desert
- Jack Bauer: [she walks away] hey
- Jack Bauer: [he catches up to her] hey what's wrong?
- Audrey Raines: Paul may have to go back into surgery, apparently the bullet did more damage than they thought.
- Jack Bauer: I'm sorry.
- Audrey Raines: I Keep thinking if I handled things differently, if I had trusted him more, maybe none of this would've happened.
- Jack Bauer: you are not responsible for this, I and I alone, made the decision on how to handle Paul, I want you to remain effective, if you want to be able to do your job, you have to let it go.
- Audrey Raines: that's your gift, you're able to block things out. I can't do that.
- Bill Buchanan: [Talking privately] I've noticed a little hostility on your part, if it's about me and Michelle.
- Tony Almeida: It's not my business, as far as the hostility goes, I can promise you it's over with.
- Bill Buchanan: Whatever you say, one more thing: I think the world of Michelle, I love working with her. Outside work we never got off ground. She never said why but it didn't take a genius to figure it out. She cared about you and she still does.
- Mike Novick: Mr. Vice-President, I just received confirmation: Air Force One sustained an indirect hit from an air to air missile fired from the stolen stealth fighter
- Vice-President Charles Logan: Is the President alive?
- Mike Novick: We don't know at this time
- Vice-President Charles Logan: When will we know?
- Mike Novick: Hopefully in the next few minutes. We've known each other for fifteen years, if I can offer some advice?
- Vice-President Charles Logan: Of course
- Mike Novick: We all hope and pray President Keeler is alive and even if he is, it's very likely he won't be in any shape to run the country, you need to make arrangements to be sworn into Office as soon as possible and the media should provide coverage. The American people need to be reassured that the leadership is intact
- Vice-President Charles Logan: That's good advice, I'll take it into consideration but I don't want to act prematurely
- Mike Novick: I understand
- Jack Bauer: [Talking privately to Michelle] I want you to uplink all current leads to a station so you and I can start working on a priority list: we might not know exactly where Marwan is but he has to be within a fifty miles radius of...
- Audrey Raines: [Walking up to them] I'm sorry to interrupt you but I just got off the phone with the Secretary of Defense and right now there's higher priority than finding Marwan
- Jack Bauer: What is it?
- Audrey Raines: Recovering the Nuclear football
- Michelle Dessler: Didn't it go down with Air Force One?
- Audrey Raines: Not exactly: the missile inflicted enough damage that the plane left a trail of debris as it went down. A lot of things were sucked out, including the football and there's a transponder embedded in the casing so we know exact location
- Jack Bauer: Good, the retrieval team should have no problem recovering it
- Audrey Raines: The Secretary wants you to head up that team Jack
- Jack Bauer: Why?
- Audrey Raines: It's his top priority: that case contains the codes and locations of our entire nuclear arsenal. Nothing is more critical than getting it back and as quickly as possible
- Jack Bauer: Fine
- Michelle Dessler: [to Jack, before walking away] I'll mobilize your team and mobilize the units
- Jack Bauer: Thanks
- Jack Bauer: What's the location of the football?
- Audrey Raines: Forty miles east of here in the desert
- Bill Buchanan: [Briefing CTU staff] by now you all know Air Force One has been shot down: the escort pilots following Air Force One managed to get a visual of the stealth fighter used to commit the act, the pilot engaged and shot down the stealth. The status of the President, is in unclear at this time. Rescue teams are minutes away, we'll know very soon
- Michelle Dessler: The man responsible on what has "transpired" today, Habib Marwan is still out there and most likely planning further attacks. I want every one of you to rededicate yourselves to finding Marwan. I don't want a single lead ignored or shred of evidence missed, let's get back to work
- Bill Buchanan: [Over the phone] I'm in direct contact with rescue teams at the crash site of Air Force One: President Keeler is alive
- Vice-President Charles Logan: [Relived] thank God
- Bill Buchanan: Yes sir but his in critical condition: his unconscious, lost a lot of blood, there's no chance his going to be able to lead this country. At least not for a few days and probably not much longer
- Bill Buchanan: [after he doesn't respond] Mr. Vice-President?
- Vice-President Charles Logan: Yes? I'm here. This all confirmed?
- Bill Buchanan: The President is med-evac to the nearest emergency center as we speak. Sir I recommend you invoke the twenty fifth Amendment and take control of things as soon as possible
- Vice-President Charles Logan: [Before hanging up] I understand
- Bill Buchanan: If the President is unable to fulfill his duties Vice-President Logan will have to assume Office: at least on a temporary basis. Cabinet will need to be briefed on the circumstance surrounding the crash
- Tony Almeida: Yeah I'll take care of it
- Bill Buchanan: Not all Cabinet members are "equal", State and Defense need more detail than say Agriculture and Treasury
- Bill Buchanan: [Raises his voice] yeah, I can handle it
- Bill Buchanan: I just want to make sure the transition is smooth
- Tony Almeida: I understand but I do know what to do
- Vice-President Charles Logan: President Keeler is alive but his incapacitated: we should probably contact Cabinet members
- Mike Novick: Actually sir I've put that in motion. Most of the Cabinet members are standing by and the others will be very soon
- Vice-President Charles Logan: You did that without my permission?
- Mike Novick: You got enough to worry about sir, I thought it'd be best to be prepared
- Vice-President Charles Logan: [Nods] yes, thank you
- Mike Novick: Should I begin the process of collecting votes?
- Vice-President Charles Logan: Yes go ahead
- Jack Bauer: [Over the phone] hey it's me
- Audrey Raines: Hey
- Jack Bauer: When I walked away from you at CTU, I felt like you didn't understand what I was trying to say. I'm not telling you that you shouldn't care. I care about you, I care about what happened to Paul, I feel completely responsible for it but right now this country's under attack and I've got a job to do and I don't have a choice
- Audrey Raines: I understand what you have to do is very important
- Jack Bauer: I just didn't want to leave things like that
- Audrey Raines: I'm glad, me neither
- Tony Almeida: [Over the phone] I got a guy on the line the police put through: his in the desert, he said he found a "case." This guy found the football
- Jack Bauer: Ok, let me speak to him
- Tony Almeida: His name is Jason Girard, we're running a background check as we speak. I'm patching you through right now
- Jack Bauer: Ok Tony, stay on the other line
- Jack Bauer: Mr. Girard?
- Jason Girard: Yeah, call me Jason, I'm with my wife Kelly who's this?
- Jack Bauer: My name is Jack Bauer, I'm a federal agent with the Department of Defense. My colleague agent Almeida says you found what we refer to as "the football"?
- Jason Girard: Yeah it sure looks that way. I mean I don't know very much about this sort of thing, my wife are out here on a camping trip
- Jack Bauer: Ok fine, why don't you just describe to me what you found?
- Jason Girard: Sure, it's a black leather briefcase, it's got a number paneling over by the handle, and it's in a protective case that's got the President Seal on it
- Jack Bauer: That sounds like it. Right now I'm in a helicopter, I'm about twenty minutes away from you. I just want you to hang out there and wait for me
- Jason Girard: I think someone beat you to the punch, I see headlights
- Jack Bauer: How far away?
- Jason Girard: It's hard to tell, a few miles?
- Jack Bauer: Ok just hold on a second Jason
- Jack Bauer: Tony, this kid Jason said his got headlights towards him, do we have any ground units in his vicinity?
- Tony Almeida: No
- Jack Bauer: Highway patrol? Park Rangers? Anything?
- Tony Almeida: No, nobody
- Jack Bauer: How can that be?
- Tony Almeida: We're spread thin: all state agencies are still assisting with the evacuation
- Jack Bauer: Son of a bitch
- Jack Bauer: Jason, are the headlights headed straight for you?
- Jason Girard: Yeah their pretty much coming this way
- Jack Bauer: Damn it. This situation just got a lot more complicated than we thought
- Jason Girard: What'd you mean?
- Jack Bauer: The football has a transponder. It's a tracking device, it allows anyone to pinpoint its exact location as long as they've got the right frequency
- Jason Girard: You think someone got a hold of the frequency that's not supposed to have it?
- Jack Bauer: Right now we have to make that assumption
- Jason Girard: Who do you think it is?
- Jack Bauer: Terrorists who carried out today's attacks. Listen, if I'm right we don't have a lot of time, I need to remove the transponder and take the football get away from there as far as you can
- Jason Girard: Ok go ahead
- Jack Bauer: The transponder's tiny and it's hidden in the surface of the case. It's designed not to be found
- Jason Girard: How am I supposed to find it?
- Jack Bauer: Do you have a compass and a flashlight?
- Jason Girard: Yeah
- Jack Bauer: I want you to move the compass over the surface of the case slowly, the transponder puts out an electromagnetic field: it's not very strong but it should move the needle. Just move the compass over the surface of the case slowly and watch the needle
- Jason Girard: [as his wife holds the flashlight while he moved the compass] I found it
- Jack Bauer: Ok good. Take a knife or a sharp rock and start scratching the surface hard
- Jason Girard: [while scraping] damn it
- Jack Bauer: Come on Jason, talk to me
- Jason Girard: I am working on it
- Jack Bauer: [after removing the transponder] ok I want you to take the compass and put it over the scrapped area and tell me is the needle moving?
- Jason Girard: No, it's not
- Jack Bauer: Ok, you've disabled it. Good work, how far is the vehicle?
- Jason Girard: Not far
