Fun and depth.

Dirty Bowling is possibly the best episode from the first series. It is so rich in content, and features some really fine guest performances, and a truly touching scene.

We learn that Bill and Ben really are big kids at heart, as they taunt one another during a bowling competition, we also learn how close the family are to Rona, as Jenny opens up to her in a touching scene. Stephen Lewis is great as the driving test man, and the arrival of the awful area manager is memorable also.

This is plenty of fun. 9/10

Warning: Spoilers
Ben is keeping a secret from Bill, after getting £3000 back from the tax man last episode. Meanwhile Bill is off to take her driving test but due to a new, extremely creepy manager at the bakery, she has to do so after visiting her dentist so her speech is affected by the treatment/anaesthetic, however she passes. Yay!

Meanwhile, Jenny has been dumped by Spin, er, Rinse, er Scott but Rona is able to help with some sage advice (which also tells us more about her) while she babysits so Bill & Ben can go bowling. Bill turns out to be pretty good at it, much to Ben's dismay. However, when she insists on going to the lock-up where they keep her car so she can surprise Ben with news of her test result, she gets a nasty surprise instead. Ben has wasted all the tax rebate on a stupid big American car.

It's a slightly bitter-sweet ending. Bill and Ben do love each other & they get on well mostly and even though Ben is thoroughly childish, it's mostly good natured and harmless. Here though he's literally thrown away what for the Porters was clearly a good chunk of money. Bill is justifiably upset and angry. It's quite a down note for a comedy but 2.4 Children carries it off.
