Stuart heads to Paris with wealthy businessman client Mr. Jacobin, who has learned that his daughter, Laura Jacobin, was called there on false pretenses in order to kidnap her. Jacobin wants Stuart to help him get Laura back in whatever way possible, Stuart's help largely in negotiating the French ways and language for him. It isn't until they are settled into a hotel in Paris that they are even contacted by the kidnappers with a coded ransom request. It isn't until after they proceed on this course to get Laura back that Jacobin divulges some pertinent information which jeopardizes that course. As such, Stuart, on the fly, has to turn to a Plan B and ultimately Plan C as they reach a new deadline which could expose that information to the kidnappers. Through it all, Stuart is thrown into the bohemian world of Parisian art and art forgery.
