It's the twenty-fifth anniversary of the death of cowboy movie star Dustin W. Duncan, and his adoring fans are making the annual pilgrimage to Celestial Acres, where he is interred, not only to pay their respects, but to watch the spectacle of the veiled lady lay a wreath at his grave. The identity of the veiled lady is unknown - her face always covered - but is suspected to be retired actress Bessie St. Clair, known to be Duncan's leading lady on and off the screen. The true spectacle this year is that as the veiled lady approaches, it is noticed for the first time that the statue of Duncan atop of bronking horse that is the centerpiece of the shrine has gone missing. Wallace Friend, the manager of Celestial Acres, hires Rex to find the statue, which belongs to the cemetery as it was an anonymous donation shortly after Duncan died. Friend admits the publicity surrounding Duncan's annual pilgrimage is a great boon to the struggling business, the statue which is always front and center in any publicity shots. As a starting point, Rex has to discover not only the true identity of the veiled lady - he suspecting that it is, at least not lately, actually Bessie St. Clair - but the sculptor and the statue donator, both who are also unknown. Frank Baker, arguably Duncan's best friend, for some reason does not want Rex involved in the case. But does his feelings make him a murderer as some people involved in the middle of the case end up unexpectedly dead?
