The loss of John Ritter was handled so beautifully...
NancyLou911 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
It's not often a show has the misfortune of managing the actual death of a cast member, especially one as loved as was John Ritter. There WERE shows in the past that had to change the actor that played a character (see "Roseanne" and "Bewitched") and they handled it by not handling it.

In "8 Simple Rules..." not only was it managed with dignity befitting a man of John Ritter's stature, it wasn't insulting to the viewer.

The best part of "Goodbye Pt. 1, Pt. 2" was when Cate was walking around while the song "In My Life" was playing. Though it is a Beatles song, it was being sung by Judy Collins and I don't know a better song could have been chosen. (Though I have yet to see this part shown again in syndication) Between the two shows, I believe they ran the gauntlet of emotions for each member of the family, with IMHO the most heart-wrenching being Bridgett and her attempting to resolve within herself her last words to her father being, "I hate you." I also feel Cate had the best lines in the entire show, with her standing, staring, at her wedding photograph, talking to Paul. Her anger towards him for breaking his promise to be there forever really got to me. When married, you always expect the other person to be there for you. When they're not, you become angry. And then you get more angry when you come to the realization you'll never have the opportunity to express that anger. Then life becomes much more unfair...

How sad was it when Rory, unthinking, went to make a bowl of cereal before realizing there was no milk (which was the errand Paul was on when he collapsed in the grocery store)and then remembering it was the missing milk that started all this in the first place.

These two shows never fail to start the waterworks for me, no matter how many times I see them. I have seen a number of shows over the years pay tribute to great actors who have died and I can't think of one which affects me as much as this does. The realism of the writing was evident when it came to each family member expressing their grief. It was obvious the writers had each experienced a loss of someone important to them.

These are a must see for anyone who is a John Ritter fan, and even if you aren't when you start watching them, you will be by the time they're done.

One of the best handled star deaths I've ever seen
jdthird10 September 2014
It's never easy move forward on a show when one of the stars die. Other shows have done it in various ways, but I really think they nailed it with this one. I was glad to see these episodes after his death even though I didn't like the show after they went on with Spade in it. But this double episode for saying goodbye was, for me, a great series ending.

This had been one of my favorite shows when it was on the air, and I've always liked John Ritter, so when he died, it was a shock, and like many others, I selfishly mourned not just his passing, but the loss of the show. So when they aired this, it was an emotional roller coaster.

You can see that the cast had little acting to do in this show, and it's amazing the difference in a show when you have the real emotions of the actors directly in the show like this.

The blend of sadness, reminiscing, healing, and small attempts at moving on were well done, and the little bits of humor they injected in here really did work well with the scenes, and didn't feel disrespectful or anything. They were kept to a minimum and were tastefully done.

For anyone who has lost a loved one, you'll see echoes of what you felt in this show in many scenes. They really got the emotions in this story.

This would be a good standard for other shows to use when they deal with the death of one of the stars.

Well-handled episode

I dont know this show so well but I heard about John Ritter when I was looking up info about Clifford's Really Big Movie. Then I heard about his sudden death two years after 9/11. But let me just say, I think this show dealt with ritter's death very maturely.

Too sad... I will... not... cry!

8 Simple Rules was canceled after the tragic and sudden death of the shows dad John Ritter. But they decided to bring it back! I was sitting down watching TV with my parents and this came on. I thought to myself, "I thought this was canceled?" (Not that I was happy about it) Then I saw that they were doing a Paul's death episode and they were gonna continue. I am not very emotional, but this changed it. A tear appeared on my face and I quickly wiped it off. Then a couple days ago, I saw it again. My mom doesn't like this episode, she says its too sad. We just kept watching it and my eyes got watery. I hid my face so she wouldn't see that it got to me. It is still a good episode though! But very sad.
