ADVENTURES IN PARADISE was a seafaring series from author James A. Michener that lasted three seasons on ABC from 1959-62, starring handsome newcomer Gardner McKay as Korean War veteran Adam Troy, now based in Tahiti, who captains a schooner named the 'Tiki,' encountering romance and peril as he roams the Pacific. This second episode from Oct 12 1959, "The Black Pearl," was directed by Robert Aldrich, featuring Lon Chaney as Trader One Arm, who supplies the pearl diving natives with goods in exchange for all the valuables they find, until one day a priceless black pearl is discovered, worth at least $40,000 to One Arm, provided he get to Australia to sell it. Accompanying the trader on Troy's 'Tiki' are several shady characters who each covet his pearl, and after One Arm tumbles overboard to be killed by a shark, the captain is sure that it's murder. With the pearl now missing, and his transmitter deliberately smashed, Troy has to play detective and ferret out the culprit on the return trip to Tahiti. This series was produced in Hollywood by 20th Century-Fox, where Lon Chaney had recently completed "The Alligator People," in which he also played a one-armed character; the only difference between the two roles is that he's far more grizzled in this one, a solid performance (rarely did he play a murder victim). Patricia Medina provides eye candy, Burmese actor Abraham Sofaer does a sympathetic turn, and Kurt Kasznar (LAND OF THE GIANTS) has red herring written all over him, but it's still an entertaining 60 minutes.
