ADVENTURES IN PARADISE – "The Pit of Silence" - 1959

Gardner McKay is a Korean War vet who stayed in the east after the war. He bought a schooner, the "Tiki", and now runs a small cargo and passenger service out of Tahiti.

The Tiki lands at a small island to drop off some cargo for the local trading post, as well as pick up a passenger. The passenger however is dead. The man fell into a wild boar pit. Unfortunately for him, there was a large wild boar already in the trap. The boar had then ripped the man to pieces. The man, was due to return to England after a year studying the flora and fauna on the island.

The trap belonged to Robert Simon. He had arranged for the natives to bring the body to the trading post. The trading post owners, Noel Drayton and Hazel Court had sent world to the local Police Commissioner. It will however be a day or two before the man can reach the island.

The dead man it seems has been knocking boots with the islands most popular widow, Tersea Wright. Wright tells Drayton, Court and McKay that a cash purse is missing from the man's possessions. She accuses Simon of stealing the item. Simon denies the charge and heads back into the bush. He has a small shack, which he shares with his wife, Margo, and a small child.

Miss Wright is adamant about the missing item and soon has the natives on the warpath. She also accuses Simon of killing her lover and dumping him in the boar pit. McKay and Drayton are forced to aim loaded rifles at the mob in-order to convince them to wait for the Police to arrive.

They take Simon in to the trading post for safe-keeping. Wright however keeps stirring the pot. The natives all liked the dead man. They begin to arm up and crowd around the trading post. McKay wonders why Wright is so interested in getting Simon killed.

He pays Wright a visit for a chat. McKay soon realizes that Miss Wright is not quite right in the head. He soon drags it out of Wright that the dead man, had promised to take her back to England. She had only discovered that the man was married, and had no intention of taking her along. She had been used! Wright had bashed the fellow on the head and dumped him in the pit. The wild boar had done the rest.

The Police Commissioner shows and Wright is taken into custody.

This was the first episode of the 1959 to 1962 adventure series. It ran for a total of 91 episodes during its run.
