We Meet Friar Tuck
ccthemovieman-129 January 2010
A romantic at heart, the bold "Friar Tuck" (Alexander Gauge) makes his first appearance on "The adventures Of Robin Hood," and he's a character, as we all remember. I thought he was a member of Robin Hood's gang but if so, it's not until a later episode. Here, he just jousts a bit with Robin and then the two of them help a couple in love.

Sir William, a real wimpy guy, is set for one of these arranged marriages, to the pretty "Mildred" (Faith Bailey). No wonder the girl wants to marry someone else. That's where Tuck and Hood come in, to help that the right person ends up with the right person. Overall, it's not as entertaining as the previous episodes, but it will still keep your attention. The by-play between RH and FT is often humorous.

Quotes of the episode: You don't want to mess with my lord," says an angry Sir William after the cleric interferes.

The friar counters, "You don't want to mess with MY Lord!"

Hmmmm. Gotcha.

True love wins out

Warning: Spoilers
Robin is summoned to help Friar Tuck. Disguised as a monk, Robin goes to the small monastery and after a humorous fight, the Friar tells Robin about a young woman who wishes to marry a yeoman but her lord has promised her in marriage to one his noblemen. The lord's power reflects a practice that makes one glad that the days of yore are long gone. Friar asks Robin to sneak the young couple out of this lord's jurisdiction. Along comes the lord with the foppish wimp of a nobleman he wants the young woman to wed (there are an awful lot of foppish, wimpy Norman noblemen in this series!) but Friar Tuck claims sanctuary on her behalf. The episode has a good dose of humor but not much action. Friar Tuck is a most fondly remembered character and I was very sad to read in his IMDb bio, that Alexander Gauge killed himself after the series ended. He was 46.

Friar Tuck

Some of the Merry men are being introduced bit by bit.

This episode has Friar Tuck who is trying to help a pretty young woman, Mildred to being married to Sir William (Leslie Phillips.)

I say, Sir William is a bit of a wimp and I am not sure he knows whether he wants a wife or a beard. It is Lord Germain who has arranged the marriage as he views Mildred as his to give.

Friar Tuck knows that Mildred wants to marry a local. He and Robin Hood who himself is disguised as a monk team up so that the right man gets Mildred.

Friar Tuck is not yet part of the team, this is the first time he has met Robin Hood.

A bit of a comedic runaround as the Friar and Robin try to persuade Sir William not to marry. Even the Sheriff pops up at the end and gives familiar looking monk some funny looks.

Apart from Leslie Phillips (to younger viewers, he was the voice of the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter movies), this episode has Douglas Wilmer as Lord Germain. He played Sherlock Holmes in the 1960s BBC television series. His last appearance was a cameo in the BBC's modern day Sherlock in 2016.
