Away From Sherwood
TondaCoolwal12 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting episode this, since most of the action takes place in London. Pick is a conman being sheltered by the outlaws. However, he is not popular when he cheats them all out of their money with a shell game. Just as they are about to teach him a lesson word comes that the Sherriff's men are lying in wait for a traveller. The Merry Men come to the rescue but the traveller is wounded and reveals he is Queen Eleanor's messenger, looking for Robin. Apparently Prince John has stolen the Queen's jewels en route to King Richard. They are being held in Hastings House a fortified mansion in London and must be retrieved. Robin takes Pick, who is also a burglar, along with him and in a Tavern they meet up with some of Pick's gang. The plan is to steal the main door key, copy it and then return it. This is accomplished by the wonderfully named Polly Chinwag and April Showers who sweet-talk a guard and lift the key. Later they return it to him, saying he left it in the tavern. Then they cause a distraction while Robin and Pick gain entry. The jewels are retrieved and Pick helps himself to other treasures. Outside the pair are confronted by guards. Pick runs away with the jewels leaving Robin ruefully contemplating his foolishness in trusting him. Back in Sherwood Little John commiserates with Robin when a pedlar comes by and drops the jewels on the table. It is Pick of course, who explains that the jewels were much too dangerous for him to hang on to at the risk of his neck. Sam Kydd is ideally cast as Pick, as is Irene Handl as Polly. You can also have fun recognising other members of the gang as cast regulars Paul Eddington and Shaun O'Riordan. Really sharp eyes will spot future William Tell, Conrad Phillips, as the unlucky guard . Great fun.

The Shell Game

Robin Hood came to the rescue of Pick (Sam Kydd) a con man from London. An expert on the variation of the three card monte.

At a time when the Sheriff's men are robbing travellers near Sherwood Forest. Then blaming Robin Hood for robbing them.

The Merrie men come to the rescue of a traveller with an important message from Queen Eleanor.

Prince John has stolen the Queen's jewels. Robin has to steal them back but they are held in a fortified house.

Robin Hood has to put his trust in Pick and his unsavoury band of ne'er do wells. He finds that like the Merrie Men. They each have some unique set of skills.

Once more Robin Hood travels to the big city and he does come across a fish out of water in this one. A nice touch of whether Pick will end up picking Robin's pockets.
