A comic book come to life
suze-45 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is the last episode of season 4 so I sadly wait for seasons 5 and 6 to be released and then there are no more that will be "new".

First of all this one has good colour and film quality unlike many of the previous colour episodes (except for the grainy and scratched stock footage of the naval ships inserted at various points in the story).

The plot is absurd yet it's possible to get into it simply because they all play it straight. Jimmy and Lois, in peril again, tied up and blindfolded, only this time Clark Kent is among them. It's a comedy but it's not very funny - just surreal. Leonard Mudie is one of the main pirates - he was Brockhurst in the most frightening and memorable episode, A Ghost For Scotland Yard. Here he plays a slapstick role in elaborate Shakespearean style.

The problems that keep this just a comic book episode are in continuity and plot holes. We see several pretty young women and there is no explanation where they came from. If the pirates are part of a family descended from other pirates who landed 300 years ago, where are the older women who would be the mothers of these girls? And inexplicably, one of the young women makes eyes at Jimmy Olsen even though they were never introduced. I suppose several scenes were trimmed out since there is so much going on.

Superman has to pretend to be tied up and captive until no one is around and he can change into Superman, which provides some tension, but since we know it's a matter of time till he saves the day, there's really no fear. The story falls apart as the pirates and the two criminals meander around doing random things. The criminals have a vague plan to steal the plane and escape with some of the jewels but they dither around and it never happens.

Superman finally gets to rush to the naval ship and tell them not to shoot, but they think he has gone insane when he tells them there are pirates living on the island. So he has to go back and bring proof: a photo he makes Jimmy take, and develops into a negative using his x-ray vision. Yet he never delivers the negative to the ship; it's too late as they start bombing and he has to stop each bomb and blow it up in mid air. We aren't able to see this because there would be no possible special effect - so various characters talk about what he is doing. These are some of the problems with the story. Too many things going on and it doesn't all flow together or end with proper resolution. Why have the whole picture taking scene unless the photo is going to be delivered in time to stop the bombing? I still think it's a fun episode, but it kind of plays like a comic book fantasy. Despite that, our heroes remain in character and give it their all.

Played Pretty Much for Laughs

The Planet reporters are being sent to what appears to be a deserted island. It is about to be obliterated by the Navy, which is testing out its firepower. Perry White wants a before and after array of photographs and Jimmy Olson is the guy with the camera. Thinking this is routine, they take about four steps and are confronted by a gang of pirates (all of whom look like they bought Halloween costumes at WalMart. They claim to be 300 years old. Also on the island are a couple of hoodlums with a group of attractive young women. They were trapped there when their plane went down. The pirates decide to kill Kent and the gang, but Clark must try to protect his true identity. Meanwhile, the Navy is ready to unleash a barrage. Time is running out. Superman goes to the commander and tells him there are pirates on the island (what if he had just told them there were a bunch of people on the island. The commander humors him and then says to his first mate, "I guess the pressure finally got to the poor guy." The final result is quite silly and contrived. I agree with those who say it was very poor final episode for this season.

Stupid episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Why did they make this episode? The pirates all have English accents. Look at the costumes! Why didn't the other group try to leave the island? What did they eat? Why is Clark a civilian, flying a United airplane? Couldn't anyone figure out that Clark was Superman? Stupid episode!

Disappointing Finish To A Good Season
ccthemovieman-127 August 2006
Season Four ended on a poor note, unfortunately, with perhaps the dumbest episode of the season.

The U.S. Navy is going to bomb a remote island in the Pacific and Clark, Lois and Jimmy are sent to take pictures of the before-and-after affects of the shelling. However, when they get to the supposedly-deserted island, they find "pirates" and captives. It's never really explained if the pirates have some distant legitimacy to them or are just plain wacky people, probably the latter. Anyway, two of their captives are thieves who plan to steal the small airplane Kent and crew few in on. While everyone is being held captive, Clark must somehow change into Superman, try to stop the Navy from bombing the island, and keep everyone safe. I'm making it sound better than it really was, because most of it was really stupid.

Now I just have to wait until the last DVD set comes out with seasons five and six. Note: there are three fairly interesting 5-8-minute features on this Seasons 3-4 set pertaining to the importance of making these color episodes. These were photographed in color but not shown in color in 1965, almost 10 years after they were made! Now that's what I call foresight. The people who made these shows helped keep the re-runs alive for decades because of this decision.

A Low-Budget Completion To Season Four
djfone11 February 2024
One wonders if this episode was filmed the same week as the earlier "Dagger Island", since they not only employ the same tropical island set and same outfits for Lois, Jimmy, and Clark......but even 3 of the same villains in Myron Healey, Ray Montgomery, and Dean Cromer. One wonders if the producers had committed those three to a full week of work on "Dagger Island" and finished early, prompting them to tell the writers to come up with a quickie script using the same set and wardrobes with these actors to get another episode wrapped on the cheap, with Reeves treating the script with a winking eye. It's no accident that this episode is among the series's lowest-rated.
