Airwolf - Echoes from the Past
Scarecrow-8816 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This elaborate scheme to swipe the Airwolf and take it to Libya is rather far-fetched but it sure raises serious stakes that could very well land the supercopter in terrorist possession. It involved Hawke given word by a shady mercenary pilot that his brother's whereabouts are almost certain. When piloting a helicopter, he falls prey to an intrusive unconsciousness, awakening in a hospital to news that Santini and Archangel are dead when rescuing his brother, St. John, from a POW camp. Of course, this is all a ruse, as those involved (led by a sketchy network of imposters from Libya, including a "shrink" and "Firm replacement" of Archangel) look to convince Hawke he's been in a coma for nearly a year, complete with faux newspaper and news reports, and a steady diet of drugs to keep him subdued. A nurse (Michelle Nicastro), suspicious of the floor Hawke is kept, soon comes to his aid, but the two are captured by an impersonator of his brother (Christopher Connelly), soon to be carried into a plane, forced to reveal the location of the Airwolf, soon including the theft of it from its resting place. But Santini might have a trick up his sleeve. Perennial television veteran, Robert Hogan, is the head of the scheme, quite an operation that required running an entire hospital floor with the likes of Zohra Lampert ("Let's Scare Jessica to Death") as the psychiatrist and sinister-looking Barbara Cason as a nurse that continues to dose Hawke. Archangel and Marella try their best to get the location of Airwolf from Santini but, to his credit, he doesn't break. Ultimately Hawke and Santini (keeping Nicastro to safety as well) secure the Airwolf, move it off the plane containing Hogan and his crew, and goes into attack mode, taking out all those responsible for the scheme of the episode, including war planes trying to missile them from the sky. The show refusing to allow the Firm to get their Airwolf back and the arc involving the missing brother are to keep an ongoing mission plan in place for the characters of the main cast while continuing on the undertaking of other missions.

A more personal episode
Fluke_Skywalker27 July 2023
Revisiting "Airwolf" of late has given me a real appreciation for the top-notch production values. In particular for the first season, which was shot in the style of a feature film. The tone of S1 also differs from that of S2/3, keeping the stories a tad more grounded and featuring a heavy Cold War, Cloak & Dagger theme, and both of those are certainly featured here.

There are plot and logic holes in this episode that are large enough to run Ernest Borgnine through, but if you're like me that's a small trade-off for this type of old fashioned and satisfying type of good guy vs. Bad guy heroics.

Echoes from the Past

This episode got one thing right. Charles & Di did get divorced but a few years after it is represented here.

Hawke meets a mercenary who claims to have information regarding his brother Saint John. Alarm bells should had rung as the mercenary did not want any money. As soon as Hawke takes off his helicopter, it crashes but Hawke miraculously survives.

When Hawke comes round in hospital he finds out that he has been in a coma for almost a year. He is told that Archangel and Santini died in a rescue attempt at a Vietnamese POW camp, but Saint John was found alive and he comes to see him.

It all turns out to be an elaborate plot from a foreign power to find the whereabouts of Airwolf now that Hawke's brother is found.

It is a rather outlandish episode but enjoyable hokum as to whether the drugged up Hawke will figure out the charade.

It is bemusing why the bad guys needed to use a real hospital to keep Hawke in a special floor.
