The wife of a moody man named Brailing is so starved for affection, she begs him to just kiss her hand, something that once happened years ago and she longs for even that. But he's a cold fish, who blanches at her touch. His neighbor, Tom Smith, is a regular fellow, but he is weakening under the strain of his wife's smothering affection. Brailing's solution is a robot doppelganger, marionette, to take his place with his wife, so he can take a vacation alone.
