While it's never stated how many gold bars were stolen the number can be calculated. With the price of gold at the stated price of $21.00 a (troy) ounce, and a standard gold bar is 400 troy ounces, this would make a bar worth $84,000 a piece. Twelve such bars would equal right at the stated value of $100,000, and when they find the buried gold, it looks like they found twelve bars, six in each bag. One mistake they made was not realizing how much they weighed, as six bars would weigh just under 165 lb. (avoirdupois) or 74.5 kg. It would have been hard to carry one bag, let alone two.
