Entertaining but flawed

It's odd how no one points out to Edith that she didn't steal anything since she was just running outside the store to help the old lady take the right bus. She was simply being forgetful. It's also odd how Edith herself doesn't realize this either and needs the priest at the end of the episode to point out the obvious to her.

Why she didn't immediately tell the store manager "I was just coming outside to tell the lady to take the right bus and forgot I had the wig on" is a mystery. Didn't she even try to explain what happened instead of going straight to believing she's a "klepper"?! It's weird.

We know Edith is a scatterbrained dingbat, but she's not a complete imbecile, so this story really doesn't work although it is entertaining. It's also strange how Archie, Mike and Gloria never point out the obvious to her when she told the story to them after she got home.

It Takes a Dingbat

This solid episode has Edith accidentally taking a wig of all things, from a local department store, and she fears she has kleptomania because an aunt of hers had it years ago. It's pretty funny when Archie finds this out, although he intends to get an apology from the store, although he's sending Edith there to get it. The grumbly James Gregory makes an appearance as the store manager, and Barnard Hughes portrays Father Majeski as only he could; he and Edith share a slightly touching scene at the church, as she wonders why she may have kleptomania, and since she refuses to see a psychiatrist, as Mike and Gloria want her to, she decides to see Majeski for advice. He eventually convinces her that the "theft" was a total accident because she was chasing down an elderly woman to tell her something about a bus, and when she finally remembers that a store assistant was a witness to this, she gives the Father a big hug in typical Edith fashion; the scene made me feel happy for her. Archie is more of a secondary character here, but I had no problem with it as the episode is still funny.

Classic episode

Barnard Hughes & James Gregory were their usual superb as always. Jean Stapleton is spectacular comically doubting herself. No one ever doubted Edith's honestly but herself. Archie of course has to get in a shot at the Jews this time.
