Caleb's Dream
claudio_carvalho31 October 2014
Caleb has a weird nightmare with a corridor and several cells. Meanwhile a man robs a Korean watch in an electronic store, but the seller press the alarm. While Sheriff Buck and Deputy Ben are heading to attend the call, Buck tries to improve Ben's self-esteem that is low, affected by family problems. When they arrive at the store, Ben realizes that the thief is his deranged brother Artie that is shot by the seller. Artie forces Sheriff Buck to take him to the hospital to remove the bullet. He takes Dr. Matt Crower, Gail and Caleb hostage and discloses that he has a bomb in his stomach that is ready to blow up in a few minutes.

"The Beast Within" is a pointless episode of "American Gothic", with a weird story. The conclusion in Caleb's dream is maybe the best part of this show. My vote is seven.

Ben's brother takes Caleb, Gail, Dr Crower and Lucas hostage

Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens Caleb is having a strange dream about a man in a cell calling for his father. Meanwhile a man in military uniform is robbing a store; strangely the only thing he is trying to take is a Korean watch… he is even willing to pay the sales tax! When the shopkeeper insists that he pays he pulls a gun. The alarm is tripped and Lucas and Ben head to the scene. Lucas goes in through the front and suggests that Ben enters through the back so that he will ultimately come off as the hero. Ben has a shock when he recognises the robber as his brother, Artie. In the confusion the store keeper shoots Artie; he is injured but demands that Lucas drives him back to his base. Lucas manages to persuade him to go to the hospital first and they get there while Caleb and Gail are talking to Dr Crower about Caleb's nightmares. Caleb is shocked when he sees Artie… he was the man in his dream! Caleb and Paige are held hostage while the Doctor examines the patient; an X-ray shows that there is more than just a bullet in him; it turns out Artie has sewn a bomb into his body and intends to detonate it in the psychiatric ward of the base hospital at 11pm. He warns that the bomb will detonate automatically at that time or if his heart rate drops significantly. As the clock ticks they will have to find a way to neutralise the threat.

This was a gripping episode even though it relies on the unlikely coincidence of Caleb and Gail being in Dr Crower's office when Artie arrives late at night. This was fairly easy to ignore at the time as the tension was pretty high from the moment Artie pulled his gun and only increased as the time approached 12pm. As usual Sheriff Buck was highly ambiguous; at times he appeared to be working to save the day at others it looked as if he was manipulating the situation from the start. It was nice to see Ben take a more prominent role; especially his heroic moment at the end. The regular cast did a solid job and Jeff Perry impressed as the troubled Artie. Overall this was a solid episode with plenty of tension throughout; it did however lack the creepiness of many of the previous episodes.
