The boys take some kids on a camping trip. Opie runs off and needs to be found, but Barney goes off half cocked and gets lost along with Gomer. He is constantly lecturing everyone about his skills as an outdoorsman, even though he knows absolutely nothing. Andy must intervene. When you get down to it, Barney is incapable of following through on just about anything.

Another ridiculous outing for Barney

Even though this is enjoyable to watch, it further shows how the writers didn't put very much thought into details. The gang hikes off into the woods and picks a random site........which happens to be accessible by pickup truck and a driver with ESP. (The man just easily drove right up INTO THE CAMPSITE for Pete's sake !!!). Gomer cooked a chicken that used to be a pheasant without killing it. After all, he said he plucked it and cooked it but didn't mention killing it. Remember, he's not an avid camper. Maybe he's a fan of cooking it alive !! Lol.
Also, they do even more damage to Barney by having him be even more inept.

Narrow escape for Barney to save face. Of course, with Andy's help. Barney's boasting is so important to the show's humor. It always brings trouble for him.
When Barney and Gomer are lost in the woods is my favorite part. Building a twig woven trap in a matter of minutes. Bird caught, plucked, cleaned and cooked also in minutes. Barney near tears of failure, turns into joy of mastering the outdoors. Total zany, preposterous, classic sequence. Even when watching this as a kid you'd think, what an idiot..
The epilogue was very good. More of Barney gloating, and digging in deeper with giving exaggerated details of his mastery of the outdoors.

Once again Barney shows his ignorance. This time when he gets Gomer and himself lost on a camping trip with Andy and the young boys. And, as usual Andy comes to Barney's rescue, saving his reputation. I wish the writers would have changed Barney's image; at least in some of the episodes.
