Yet another fine object lesson taught in a pleasant and enjoyable manner.
planktonrules18 October 2010
This episode begins with a spoiled brat of a man driving through town like he owned the world. As far as being caught speeding goes, he feels that the Sheriff should give him special consideration because he comes from a rich and well-connected family. And, when Andy doesn't let him off with just a warning or fine, the young man becomes abusive and threatens to ruin Andy. As for Andy, he sticks to his guns and locks up the guy. Later, through a long series of events, the guy comes to realize that he was a jerk and should accept the consequences graciously. So, when the powerful Dad does intervene, Bixby is willing to finally stand on his own and accept what he's justly earned.

While I have never been a huge Bill Bixby fan, he's at his best here and does one of the better guest appearances in the show's history. On top of that, it's a darn good episode thanks to lovely writing and it manages to teach a great object lesson in a painless and enjoyable manner.

Bixby's Just Upcommance Is A Mirror of Narcism Vs. Humility
AudioFileZ13 November 2023
Forget Bill Bixby is playing a 19-yr. Old brat while he's actually 28. That's nitpicking. Bixby nails the entitled youth thing which is the lynchpin of the story. His performance is more than good enough and I believe the Hollywood producers saw this as he would go on to work constantly. The story resonates as we see throughout time to the present of those who have been raised with a silver spoon often acting as if the same rules society must abide by doesn't apply. Like many episodes there's a lesson for everyone within the comedy. I'd say the transformation of Bixby's character is a good one from which the kernel of truth is the hick town and hick sheriff's department is elevated to that of a mirror which should still be applied to all those who somehow have a superiority complex. This, with the emergence of a new talent, carry this episode quite nicely.

He Could Have Become the Hulk

Bill Bixby, a nineteen year old, who looks older, sideswipes a pickup full of vegetables, and then runs. Andy brings him in, even though his father is some big shot with money to burn. That transpires in the jail is beyond belief, but it is still entertaining.

Warning: Spoilers
Funny episode. A 28 year old Bill Bixby plays a spoiled brat 19 year old who hasan accidentin Mayberry and damaging other property. He learns a lesson in humility by being in jail for the weekend. Andy takes him home to supper with aunt bee. Those who said he looks 35 or 40 go get some glasses. He's actually 28 and only 1 year before he gets his own show my favorite Martian with Ray Walston.

For an excellent review go back to bsg2424.

Especially appreciate that bsg2424 researched & shared Mr Bixby's correct AGE back then instead of complaining & speculating - some reviewers wildly inaccurately. I agree 💯 with each & every thing that bsg mentioned. But tbh i came here bc i'm viewing this episode on tv right now. Thinking "hey this entitled Bailey punk sure does look & sound (he always had kinda raspy voice) like a young Bill Bixby!" But NO!?! Searched cast on tv - no Bill! ... yeah, so now i've come here to just make sure i hadn't finally gone crazy without really realizing it? ... so he's here, that's a YAYYY! ... well i guess that means i'm not nuts yet at least. Ya know something though? Gotta admit, i'm a little disappointed. I was kinda looking forward to that sweet release of insanity! 😏

Andy Griffith 35, Don Knotts 37, Bill Bixby 28

A very charming story. Not a lot of laughs. Bill Bixby is terrific. But, the fact he's 28 playing a 19 year old took a little away from the chemistry. If he was actually 19 it would make the episode more realistic. Another dirt road with dust stirred up. But, nothing gets dirty? Also odd they keep calling a 19 year old a "boy" like he's 4 years old.
