This is one of the rare shows beyond the third season where actor Howard McNear (Floyd, the barber) actually moves freely. McNear had suffered a stroke and could not normally walk. In the scene where Barney is presented a surprise cake, McNear can be very briefly viewed walking stiff, with short steps, but without assistance. Normally after his stroke, McNear's scenes were either of him sitting, or standing via a hidden brace.
The sign outside the Civil Service office listed eight names who supposedly had offices in the building. At least three of the names worked on the set of various sitcoms of the day, including The Andy Griffith Show: K. [Ken] Swartz (set decorator), [John C.] Chulay (asst. director) and Glenn Ross (property master).
In this episode, Barney Fife (Don Knotts) celebrated his fifth year working for the sheriff's office on May 16, indicating that he joined the police force on May 16, 1959. Throughout the series, his start date varies. In Episode 4.11 "Citizen's Arrest" (December 16, 1963), Andy Taylor (Griffith) discovered the custody receipt for the first revolver issued to Fife, dated August 1953. In Episode 1.5 "Irresistible Andy" (October 31, 1960) it was noted that Fife had only been on force for 18 months which would set his start date in the spring of 1958.
