Answering the briefcase question
scottie_stanley7 March 2021
Where would the FBI agent have kept the briefcase if he took it from Andy upon the agent's arrival in Mayberry. The agent wasn't immediately returning to the FBI headquarters as he was staying in Mayberry to catch the criminal. It's not a major plot hole, at least not in my opinion.

If I Were Andy, I Wouldn't Tell Him Anything
Hitchcoc17 December 2019
Once there is a whiff of a major crime or criminal near Mayberry, Barney feels he and others should drop everything and go after them. It doesn't matter if his superiors or even the FBI tell him to lay off, he jumps right in at the risk of his life a the destruction of the case. Once more, Andy saves his skin, but his stupidity doesn't faze him at all. What he is is nth degree insubordinate. He takes 200,000 dollars out of the safe and hands it over to a man who has flat out lied to him.

Andy trusted Barney with the safe combination?
vitoscotti21 June 2022
Some truly classic Barney scenes. Ones liked to mention a few the Floyd talk, FBI handshake, knockout drops.

No FBI agents nearby like in Raleigh? The agent was oddly nonchalant about the money security protocol to give the script an opening for Barney to take it.

Barney disobeys orders multiple times. He could of been charged with theft taking the money out of the safe.

Don Knotts & Al Checco had good chemistry being old buddies. Epilogue was a little flat redoing the gun in the pants going off.

BARNEY AGAIN DISOBEYS ORDERS!
JSGal27 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When a briefcase is found with $250,000 and it was discovered there was a bank robbery, and the FBI would be coming to Mayberry to pick it up, Barney wanted to move on the case. Andy specifically ordered Barney not to do anything but wait for the FBI to arrive. However, once again, Barney disobeyed orders! He has interfered and disobeyed so many times, often putting Andy at risk, he would have been fired a long time ago! But once again, the sheriff came to Barney's rescue.

Major Flaw in this Episode

Warning: Spoilers
TAGS has always been one of my very favorite TV shows since it first came out during my childhood in the 60s, so I hate pointing out flaws and bad storylines in it, but this one is too big to ignore, and it's not mentioned in the two reviews here:

When Barney turned the briefcase with the quarter million dollars over to Andy, and Andy was told the FBI would be there soon to pick it up, then WHY DIDN'T THE FBI AGENT GET IT FROM ANDY WHEN HE CAME TO THE MAYBERRY COURTHOUSE LATER THAT DAY???

He just met him and left, and left the money in the safe there, so when Barney met the bank robber who pretended to be the FBI agent later that night, the money was still there for Barney to get from the safe to hand over to him.

Of course there would've been no story or comedic skit with Barney and the bank robber in the second half of the show if the real FBI agent had taken the money when he first got there, but it was a glaring mistake to have him come and meet Andy and leave without Andy getting the briefcase out of the safe to give him to take back to FBI headquarters. So it was still there later that night for Barney to get out to hand over to the criminal. The sole reason the real FBI agent came to Mayberry was to get the briefcase with the stolen money, yet he goes into the courthouse and meets Andy and leaves without it. Then later when he and Andy catch the criminal with it, is when he finally takes possession of it.

Extremely obvious huge mistake in the plot. I'm surprised the actors went along with it. They could've rewritten it that the FBI agent didn't arrive in Mayberry until after Barney had taken it out of the safe, but it was still in the safe when he first arrived, yet he didn't take possession of it yet....
