Right, Mabel Albertson as mother was a gem with her chronic pains and discomfort and we are introduced to Howard Sprague who lets his mother control him like a small boy. Helen, control freak, gets it into her head to plan a double date with Howard and the new county nurse. Howard acts like the last thing he wants to do is date a female.

I thought there were a few subtle laughs delivered by Andy especially at the restaurant but most unbelievable was that a woman like Miss Fairchild would be available for a date with Howard whom Opie even made fun of. Miss Fairchild was friendly, pretty, patient and almost perfect yet all Howard could think about was Mother. One would think he would at least be embarrassed by his relationship with her.

The Howard Sprague character was certainly an added bonus and was the main character in many future episodes. He seemed to show little interest in the county nurse but later when he meets the sister of the teenager he is trying to help he shirks his studying to be with her. Maybe Howard is a late bloomer. I really enjoyed the Howard episodes especially when he goes to a Caribbean island and throws a bachelor bash. Jack Dodson did a great job playing a guy who goes from being as dry as dust to an adventurous bachelor.

Funny first Howard Sprague episode.
vitoscotti23 July 2022
Mrs Sprague (Mabel Albertson) is the highlight with her "shooting pains". Mommies boy Howard is as dry as they come. A unique addition to the cast. He'll have some funny series moments, but he's not a laugh machine. The lovely Nina Shipman & Colleen O'Sullivan were pleasant to look at. Jim Begg looks like everybody's twirp. A well written story that was entertaining despite so many dry characters. A 10* rating but without the memorable Mabel Albertson performance would be a 4*. Helen (Aneta Corsaut) has more screen time in the color episodes which certainly is a plus.

Nice episode!

Howard Sprague is one of my favorite characters from the color era. He fared better than poor Warren. Howard is a dedicated man and devoted to his job and family. Definitely worth the watch.

Pushy Helen

It would seem that Andy and Helen are not on an even footing. It doesn't seem to matter what Andy thinks, even if it's good advice. She obviously is withholding affection to get what she wants. All in all, she is pretty tiresome and Andy is shown to be quite weak. We are introduced to Howard Sprague (although Jack Dodson appeared in another episode as a different character). This episode gets silly.

One That Might Have Been Left On The Cutting Room Floor

This is TAGS dealing again with no Barney Fife. We have here an episode dealing with county clerk Howard Sprague. Howard is the quintessential nerd outcast. Devoted to his job, and mt ore so his mother whom he lives with, is as stiff as a 4X4. There's only so much that can be done with the character. Mabel Albertson (later to even better effect with Oliver Douglass' mother) offers some comedic relief though, overall, a largely not very funny episode. Helen Crump shows that she can manipulate Andy into setting up a dinner with the new county nurse as Howard's date much against Andy's own instincts. It's little surprise the date is a fail. What's more surprising is how flat the whole episode comes off. Barney's absence looms large when things go this bland.

The precise moment TAGS jumped the shark
silverpilgrim-568961 July 2021
This will be the shortest TAGS review on record. Howard Sprague and his mother; over the shark it went.
