Not Bad for a Darling Episode
scottschada@yahoo.com20 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I used to be so bummed when I saw that one of the evening's AGS episodes was going to be a Darlings or an Ernest T. Bass, but this one has a good story with a clever resolution. I even enjoyed the music. Because I usually switch channels, I hadn't even noticed that Barney was getting lit during a musical celebration number with a jug of hooch. This one doesn't grate on me, has a lot of smiles, and even seems plausible in the crazy world of the Darlings. There is a (truly) adorable Darling baby which the family attempts to get betrothed to poor victim Opie. Of course a way out of that predicament is figured out in an entertaining way that would only work with the highly superstitious Darlings.

Planned marriage

Well the Darlings are back & with the idea of finding a future husband for Charlene's baby girl. Another mountain tradition, of course Opie turns out to be the target & Andy is alittle upset. Briscoe Darling is sure Opie will be the right one & will not listen to Andy. Andy suggest that they do some picking & maybe it will be cleared up. I guess Aunt Bee was on vacation no sign of her getting involved. As there picking Barney samples the mulberry squeezins & as always Barney gets wasted & starts to interfere with the whole process. Andy & Opie deceide to use a trick Opie used with lemon juice as disappearing ink. When it time to sign the papers Andy says a few words which he tells Briscoe is a family tradition. Andy & Opie sign & within 10 seconds both signatures disappear. The Darlings get spooked, the deal is off & out the door they run. Barney is still trying to stop it & the squeezins are doing the talking. Funny episode and as usual Don Knotts makes the whole thing funny!

Don Knotts used to fill dead spots

Not a bad Darling episode. The Charlene throwing herself at Andy was getting a little over done. The script premise was interesting but didn't use a lot of time. Dillard's singing and Don Knotts were used to fill time.

Some great Don Knotts scenes telling the story of Halcyon the prune pitting heiress. His drunk scenes were topnotch Barney classic.

I Like Bluegrass, but........

The Darlings are back. Charlene has a little baby girl. In their goofy tradition, they are in town to find a future husband for the baby. This leads to lots of hue and cry. Andy has, on other occasions, used their superstitions against them. The trick is finding something that will work. Barney is quite hilarious in this one. Now, let's keep those Darlings in the hills for the rest of the series!
