A really fun episode
katierose29519 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Angel and Cordy make a good point in this episode. Sex in the Buffyverse usually leads to badness. For instance, somebody could go evil and start wiping out the town. (See BTVS season two.) "Expecting" has Cordy sleeping with a guy and getting more than she bargained for. This episode has a pretty clear message to it. Namely, sex can be complicated, so make sure you really know who you're bringing home or you might wind up pregnant and alone in the big city. You could probably skip this episode and not miss a lot story wise. (Although, it will be referenced in season three.) But, it does have some really cute moments, so I recommend that you give it a shot.

"Expecting" revolves around Cordy going on date with her new boyfriend, Wilson. After a night of talking and dancing, they go back to her place and sleep together. The next morning Cordy wakes up nine months pregnant and the guy is nowhere to be found. Angel and Wes find her crying in her bedroom and promise to help her figure out what's going on. Wes takes Cordy to the OB-GYN while Angel goes looking for Wilson. It turns out that Wilson and his friends have done this to other girls, too. Cordy's friends are all hugely pregnant and Angel is more convinced than ever that a demon is behind this.

At the doctor's office, Cordy has an ultra sound. There are seven little somethings inside of her and she's beginning to act oddly. By the time Wes takes her back to Angel's, she's referring to them as her "babies." Wes and Angel think that Wilson and his buddies are surrogates for a demon's seed. The demon uses them to impregnate women and now its offspring are "talking" to Cordy, taking over her mind. Angel goes to find Wilson and beats information about the demon out of him. Meanwhile, Cordy knocks Wes out and escapes. She heads for a meeting with the demon. All the other pregnant women are there, too. Angel and Wes arrive and defeat the demon. The women are cured and Cordy realizes that Wes and Angel are the two people that she can trust most in the world.

There are some really fun parts in "Expecting." The scene with Cordy's friends meeting Wes and Angel is just hilarious. From Wes's excitement over hearing that Cordy's dating a guy named Wilson Chistopher, ("No! The ethno-archaeologist?" "No, the fashion photographer.") to Angel desperately trying to cover while Cordy has a vision, to the girl's thinking that Wes and Angel are dating... It's all really funny. And I love the scene of Wes and Cordy in the doctor's office. The look on Wes's face when he sees the demons on the ultra sound is especially great. And I just have to laugh when Cordy starts drinking Angel's jars of blood from the refrigerator. Angel stares at her, his face all scrunched up in an "ewww" sort of expression and he mutters, "I never realized how disgusting that is." Finally, I like Angel beating up all those guys who were in league with the demon. It's a real satisfying scene considering how much I hate them. Angel's such a sweetheart to Cordy and then he goes and just thrashes those sleazy jerks because they hurt her. Angel rocks.

On the down side, this is the first time that we know of Cordy's having sex and THAT'S the guy she chooses to be with? Why? This is the first time he's even mentioned. It seems kind of soon after Doyle's death for her to be moving on.

My favorite part of the episode: Wes and Angel breaking through a door, weighed down with weapons, searching for demon eggs... and bravely confronting a old couple in their Lazy-Boys.

Gee, Wesley, I'd love to, but unlike you, I'm not in my 80's quite yet

Warning: Spoilers
Gee, Wesley, I'd love to, but unlike you, I'm not in my 80's quite yet - Even though it's one, if not the silliest episode of the entire series. I think it's also very entertaining and explores the 'Cordelia' character better and makes the current gang get a little closer which is for me, enough to like this episode a lot. The episode has 'Cordelia' getting impregnated with demon sperm by having sex with a dude who worships a huge funny-looking demon. Now 'Cordy' has seven demon babies and begins to act pretty crazy herself, I love the hormones she gets and of course when she drinks 'Angel's pigs blood. The episode was so cheesy and clichéd it made you think that was the whole point, my favorite scene was in the doctor's office with 'Cordy's hormones, I mean, wouldn't you be grouchy if you had seven demon babies growing in you? I also loved the scene with all those evil pregnant woman, Charisma Carpenter gave a very entertaining performance this entire episode. The ending was also great with 'Cordelia' saying what she learned from all of this and 'Wesley' getting all teared up. Once again I say that it's one of the cheesiest if not, the most cheesiest episode of the show but it's done in the most entertaining way possible. I loved how much 'Angel' cared for 'Cordy'. CORDELIA: He is so sweet. He says that all I have to do is let him impregnate me with his demon master's seed, and I've got the part... Guys, I appreciate all the concern, but I'm okay. I mean, it was an ordeal, but I got through it, and I'm a lot stronger than those loser demon surrogates thought. ANGEL: I'm starting to learn that. CORDELIA: I learned something, too. I learned, uhm, men are evil? Oh, wait, I knew that. I learned that LA is full of self-serving phonies. No, had that one down, too. Uh... sex is bad? ANGEL: We all knew that. (8.0 out of 10)

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: I thought it was Xander who had the thing for demons? Cordy: 2 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast Angel: 1;Buffy

Kinky dinky: How gorgeous are CCs friends, especially Sarina? Obviously this goes some VERY dark places, it smacks of GOT fetishism (beautiful women being raped and impregnated by demons/monsters/aliens who they then fall in love with, just google 'Monsters and Angels' to see the Buffy girls doing just that), the ultrasound reminds me of the infamous maternity ward scene in Aliens vs Predator; Requiem (of course Joss wrote Alien Resurrection so he's no stranger to the concept). Considering that Joss is supposed to be this great pro-feminist he puts his heroines through a lot of nasty stuff, almost like he wants to have his cake and eat it. Wilson apparently nearly had phonesex with the restaurant manager to get them in. Cordy drinks Angel's pig's blood, Angel states he never realised how disgusting it was until just then. At the end Cordy states she's learned sex is bad and men are evil. Angel agrees.

Captain Subtext; The girls assume Wes and Angel are a couple. Angel says it adds mystery. Angel describes Cordy as family and she says she trusts him and Wes implicitly.

Know the face, different character; 2

Parking garages; 3,

Buffy characters appearing in Angel; (unless someone can correct me no original Angel character ever appears on Buffy?) 6; Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes

Questions and observations; Fun story, putting Angel Investigations together more and more. How wonderful that when Wes has to come up with a name for him and Cordy he decides on Mr and Mrs Penborne. Angel comments that their French client made him want to drink a lot. Alcohol or blood? CC refers to Angel giving her date the 3rd degree which he and Doyle also did in the Bachelor Party. Wes refers to David and Goliath, the Watchers Council occasionally make biblical references.

The One Where Cordelia Gets Knocked Up...
taylorkingston17 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode so much. It's so smart. I just love everything about it.

In this episode, Cordelia goes out with a guy, then wakes up the next day, in her apartment, nine months pregnant. So, what happened? She doesn't know, and neither does Angel or Wesley. They figure out that men are paid to have sexual relations with women, and impregnate them with demon seed. Nice. So, Cordelia is struggling with being that pregnant that quickly. When she goes to the doctor's office, she is just hilarious. She finds out that not only is she carrying a demon baby, she's carrying about twelve. And the babies inside manipulate her using mind control, and Cordelia starts protecting her devil babies. She even hits Wesley unconscious. She goes to give birth, with all the other mothers, yes, there are more, and then, thankfully, Wesley and Angel stop the weird pregnancies.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

Cordy: I'll play 'Evita' around the clock. The one with Madonna.
bombersflyup22 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Expecting is about Cordy waking up pregnant with demonic spawn and Angel and Wes searching for answers.

The premise may be flimsy, how these four got involved with this demon and its use of money, but the episode brilliant for the most part. With a multitude of memorable scenes, from Cordy threatening phantom Dennis, to Wesley barging in on the elderly couple, and more. The best though is the prenatal checkup scene, just hilarious. The episode riddled with humour, but has a serious tone and never completely silly. The secondary characters unfortunately quite poor and the demon at the end goofy, combined with the flimsy premise knocks it down a tad, but I love it.

My guilty pleasure episode this season.
m-478268 June 2021
It is not liked by most, to say the least. But I don't care. I like it, it's funny and creepy at the same time. An homage to both Rosemary's baby and Alien. This is also where the show seems to be finding its pace and tone. I always preferred the second half of season one. The first had interesting episodes, but Doyle never really grows on me. And after reading about the actor, it is clear his leaving the show wasn't an artistic choice. Season 1B, is the one I owned on VHS first, because I couldn't wait to watch the « Faith » crossover episodes. So it also has a personal meaning for me. Expecting, is kind of a relief after this boring episode, where Jeremy Renner was introduced. It's the first real Cordelia centric episode, and she was a great character back then. Too bad that didn't last. The monster looks ridiculous, but not in a way it ruined it for me. Season one is my third favorite, after two and four, but this episode is one that showed how easily entertaining the series can be.
