Just going through the motions....and boring.
By the time "Archie Bunker's Place" debuted in 1979, "All in the Family" was practically dead. Much of the old cast was gone and the hard edge was completely gone. I almost never watched "Archie Bunker's Place" as a result. Well, today I was sick and bored and when a rerun came on of the old series, I watched to see if my recollections about the series were correct. While one episode is NOT proof that the show sucked, I can say that "The Camping Trip" was dreadful. With no Edith, Gloria or Michael, the entire show is Archie...a very low-energy and tied Archie. There are also a plethora of characters that either make no sense (Archie with a Jewish business partner and a black housekeeper) or annoyed (bringing in a kid to star in the show clearly was jumping the shark). So what do you have left? Archie being stupid...with no real rhyme or reason. Why does he go to a meeting about a girl scout outing and make a total fool of himself? I don't know...and the result was just a sad shadow of a once-great franchise. It's amazing to think that this show continued for more than two more seasons!
