- Elderly Mr. Grace requests Mrs. Slocombe's help in "choosing a ring." This leads the staff to wonder: is Mr. Grace thinking of taking their colleague as his new wife?
- Mrs. Slocombe refuses to sell a new line of underwear, but both Captain Peacock and Mr. Rumbold dismiss her complaints, and Mr. Grainger still resents her for taking up half the floor-space for the ladies' department. Then Mr. Grace arrives to announce his plans to marry someone in the store and invites Mrs. Slocomb to tea to discuss a ring. Everyone automatically thinks Mr. Grace will propose, and Mrs. Slocombe dresses up for the occasion while the staff wonders what the future would hold with Mrs. Slocombe in charge.—Nadia Nassar
- Peacock isn't amused when Slocombe refuses to sell a range of saucily text-printed underwear approved from above and overplays her hand by claiming she might resign over it, which Brahms reports. Grainger openly hopes she leaves and the men can reclaim that women's lingerie corner. Rumbold sides against her, so she wants to take it to Mr. Gtace, who just arrives, to ask her advice to select a ring for a 'private matter'. Colleagues presume that she's to become his bride, hence have top dog's ear, and grovel to apologize or even get in her favor while she starts spending and fussing. What will happen when she returns from her private tea with Sir?—KGF Vissers
