With friends like these, who needs enemies?
planktonrules9 July 2021
"Friends Till Death" is an episode that starts poorly but ends up being a dynamite show after all. It begins with Betty going to lunch with an old college friend...and the friend indicates she's in trouble and needs Barnaby's services. However, when Betty goes to the bathroom, the friend freaks out when she sees some scumbag and she runs. Moments later, she's tossed off the roof to her death!

When another college friend (Susan Oliver) arrives, Betty thinks it's a good thing. What she doesn't know is that this friend and the dead one had some business together...and that business involves heroin!

This is a pretty good episode, save the first few minutes. The woman running made little sense and the suicide was pretty clearly some old dummy tossed off a building. It really could have been done better. However, the rest of it's very good...and Ross Martin plays a most enjoyable villain.

By the way, this is the fourth time in the series, so far, where Betty's been kidnapped. I think like on "Mannix" the writers went to that well a few times too often, as Mannix's secretary, Peggy, seemed to get kidnapped at least a couple times each season!

Actor Ross Martin is outstanding as "Maxwell Imry"
FloridaFred30 April 2021
Susan Oliver, Vincent Talbot, and the other actors in this show do a great job. But actor Ross Martin (who played "Artemus Gordon" in "The Wild Wild West") absolutely dominates this story, as criminal-mastermind Maxwell Imry.

Barnaby's daughter-in-law Betty, and her friend from college "Karen Macklin" (played by Susan Oliver), are in dire straits. Can Jones rescue them from the clutches of Maxwell Imry?

I rate "Friends Till Death" 10 stars, almost entirely because of the great acting of Ross Martin.

HOW OLD FRIENDS CHANGE!
tcchelsey13 November 2023
I always credit the strengthening of Lee Merriwether's role (as Betty) to that of Gail Fisher on MANNIX. They were both terrific actors who deserved larger parts, and they got them.

This may be one of Lee's best early roles on the series. The story begins with her having lunch with an old college friend who needs help --and gets killed just as quickly! Betty naturally calls Barnaby, and at the same time she meets another college pal, Karen (well played by Susan Oliver). Susan portrayed some interesting characters in her career, and this is one of them.

This connection all leads to a really treacherous situation for Betty. Applause for Ross Martin, one versatile actor and a master of voices, playing super bad guy Maxwell. I agree with the last reviewer, Ross steals the show, he is that diabolical. One of his best bad guy roles was on an early episode of COLUMBO, "Suitable for Framing", opposite Kim Hunter.

In one scene, Ross looks like Count Dracula, and I am not kidding.

Great support by Scott Marlowe (as Vincent) and Peter Brocco (as Harvey), who also played lots of baddies in classic films.

Filmed partly at the magnificent Sepulveda Dam and Wildlife Park at Encino, the site for a ton of movies and tv shows as its so picturesque.

This was the only episode directed by Russ Mayberry, long with IRONSIDE and KOJAK. On the lighter side, he also directed the BRADY BUNCH.

Recommended, if you can stay up late! SEASON 2 EPISODE 19 CBS remastered dvd box set.
