"The Medium" has two HUGE strikes against it. First, and this is a problem with many later episodes, is that Barnaby is barely in the show and it's left to the far less charismatic and professional, Jedediah. Second, it includes a major character who is a kooky psychic who speaks in a squeaking kooky voice. I think she was the physical embodiment of fingers being run across a blackboard!
A crazed guy is murdering women but he's hiding the bodies so well folks think the women just disappeared. A priest goes to Barnaby about this as one of the victims is his sister. Oddly, however, the priest then suggests that Barnaby consult with a psychic in order to find her. Now this just seems odd...like a conflict of interest between the Church and the paranormal. Why they made the guy a priest is confusing to me.
The killer is played by Norman Alden and as soon as he appeared on the show, my wife said "uh oh....he MUST be the killer!" because he usually plays hotheads and criminals!
So is it any good? Of course not! The psychic angle seems totally out of place in the show...and I noticed that in the later episodes they must have run out of ideas and they introduced a LOT of bizarre plots. Clearly the show had jumped the shark long before and the series' best days were long behind. A tough episode to like....even with the always excellent Alden as a guest star.
