When the episode begins, you see a woman and her son staying at a hotel. After she checks out, a man arrives at the hotel's front desk. He identifies himself as the woman's husband...and brandishes a gun and then decks the guy!!
A bit later, the woman stops to see Jedediah. It seems that she is an old friend and she tells him about her problems she's having with her ex-husband. While Jedediah and Floyd used to be friends, the man she describes to Jedediah is not the same guy....he's violent, controlling and incredibly jealous. And, the guy in the hotel is not the first man Floyd has attacked!
When Jedediah sees Floyd later, Floyd seems very reasonable and nice....so much so that it makes Jedediah wonder what the truth is. So, he contacts the Chicago police and learns the husband was removed from the force because he was so violent and abusive....and unstable.
Soon after this, Floyd takes his son (who is in his mother's custody) and disappears. What's next? See the show.
Apart from the way overused trope involving friends of Betty and Jedediah is jeopardy, this is a pretty good episode. It does provide a public service by exposing how dangerous and manipulative some exes can be. Well done....but you do think being Jedediah's friend is definitely a BAD idea!!
By the way, the end of the episode frames Floyd's problems as being mental and treatable. Well, as a trained psychotherapist who has dealt with domestic violence and personality disorders, this assessment by the characters is WAY premature and probably NOT the case. In such cases, treatment is difficult, if not impossible.
