The character animation of Mary Dahl is nearly identical to that of Mitzy from the cartoon Animaniacs (1993), which is also by Warner Brothers.
The character of Cousin Spunky Spencer is an obvious reference to Cousin Oliver, played by Robbie Rist, a character introduced in The Brady Bunch (1969)'s last season and credited with ending the show. Whilst sharing a similar appearance to Oliver, Spunky is also a musician, just like Robbie Rist. Although Jason Marsden voices Spunky, Robbie Rist voices the character of Brian Daly, an actor who played Dahl's older brother in the show 'Love That Doll'.
The opening scene shows actors leaving a playhouse after a performance of "Death Of A Salesman," possibly as a reference to the similar themes of misunderstood or altered reality and the desire for greatness felt by Mary Louise Dahl. The frequent viewing of old episodes of "Love That Baby" also serve as a stand-in for the flashbacks of "Death Of A Salesman."
