'Shadow of the Bat' is ostensibly the entrance of a new (beloved) character - okay, it's Batgirl - but the bigger picture is surprisingly well-orchestrated. Barbara Gordon's already been established as a strong character, so her refusal to take her father's frame-up sitting down totally works.
But there's also the looming threat of a new outfit coming into town, a mole in the D.A.'s office, and they even work in Two-Face without coming off forced. There's a lot going on and this is only the setup. Steeped in gangster movie, it's an engaging and well-written story.
8/10
