• Phyllis Stephens : [Removes lid from the decanter of sherry]  I imagine Samantha keeps a little sherry for her uncle Arthur.

  [Pours herself a glass] 

  Serena : Why would you think that?

  Phyllis Stephens : Oh, don't misunderstand, Serena. I think Samantha's uncle Arthur has a marvellous sense of humour. It is just that his practical jokes are sometimes so unexpected. Don't you think he nips it up a bit

  Serena : Only when he needs reassuring.

  Phyllis Stephens : That's what I meant.

  [downs drink and looks at the giant hourglass in the living room, the sand flowing in the wrong direction] 

  Phyllis Stephens : Perhaps if you covered it.

  Serena : It's not dead, Mrs Stephens. Besides, I'm timing Tabitha's nap.

  Phyllis Stephens : Oh, I worry about that girl.

  Serena : Tabitha?

  Phyllis Stephens : I can be honest with you, can't I?

  Serena : Please do

  Phyllis Stephens : [Moves closer to Serena who shifts backwards, her arms folded tightly]  Well, Samantha wants to keep this baby all to herself.

  [Serena is fuming and glaring at Mrs Stephens] 

  Phyllis Stephens : Of course, I wouldn't dream of saying something to Samantha. She's being very selfish and perhaps someone other than her mother-in-law should advise her.

  Serena : For her own good?

  Phyllis Stephens : Of course, and for Tabitha's. Why it would break my heart to see that darling child follow her mother's example and grow up to be selfish.

  Serena : [Can't stand it any longer]  That rips it!

  [stands up and zaps Mrs Stephens into a cat] 

  Phyllis Stephens : [Furiously miaows] 

  Serena : Meow, meow, yourself
