The Center of attention
bkoganbing4 July 2016
I knew someone like Diane Baker's character in real life in the gay world. He was someone who was obsessed with being the center of attention no matter what the situation. With Baker this obsession almost splits the Barkley family.

Peter Breck goes east on business and meets Baker who sweeps him off his feet. He's ready to get married and brings her back to The Big Valley. But Baker's like Scarlett O'Hara another self absorbed party girl and she gets bored with ranch life. She starts flirting with Lee Majors and I don't think I have to tell you the rest.

Nick Barkley was one of the toughest western characters ever on big screen and small with one quick temper to match. Fortunately cooler heads including Heath's prevail.

This episode belongs to Peter Breck and to guest star Diane Baker.

Do the Barkleys ever have a successful romance?
lucianolvr20 March 2019
I'm enjoying watching the old episodes of The Big Valley. Nick was such a hunk! And Lee Majors looks like a god. I haven't seen one episode yet where one of the men has a lady who they love, who either lives or doesn't end up in prison or leave them for another man. Or get them paralyzed. Is this whole family star crossed? And what about beautiful Audra? Does she EVER find a husband? I hope so but doubt it...

Glad they chose Diane Baker for this role because she was the best thing about it
mlbroberts22 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nick comes home with a fiancee that everyone is a bit unsure about. She is a San Francisco socialite that no one knows (although Jarrod remembers seeing her at a function in SF and he's got his doubts about her) and anybody can see she is all wrong for Nick. She needs the constant attention of every man around her, and she milks it. She milks it with Heath, and Nick's jealous explosion follows.

But it's not that interesting a plot. Everyone goes on a camping trip (lucky Jarrod gets to avoid it because he's busy working) that results in Nick and Heath fighting it out and Nick being seriously injured. They spend a lot of the episode just getting Nick home on a backboard while Hester (Diane Baker) figures out this marriage thing with Nick is not going to work.

Diane Baker is and was an underrated actor and was perfect for this role, but I've often heard it said that the best actors are those that can make a good performance out of a bad script. I don't think this was a good script, but Diane Baker made a good performance out of it.

Bad Reviews

First of all, this wasn't the best BV episode but not the worst. The other reviewer had their facts wrong. First, her name was Hester, not Heather. And they are on a camping trip, not lollygagging around the ranch. Jarrod had his doubts as well. A good episode to see the vulnerable side of Nick that we don't get to see too often. I love how a big strapping hunk of a cowboy can also be a sensitive soul. I thought it was also a good showcase for Eugene and it was a shame they did not continue his character. We also see a rugged side of Audra that is rarely seen, when she is cleaning fish. Any episode with this much Nick is a good one.

in 1 review incorrect information

I like this episode very much to see the dynamic among the family.

But to correct one of the reviews. San Francisco is not east of Stockton. But more importantly he said that Victoria was talking about Heath being four years old and sick with pneumonia. She actually said Jared. No reason to give such a low rating saying that there was errors.

Much ado about not too much
summerfields14 April 2010
A very mediocre episode. Theme is a gal whom Nick has romantic intentions towards and she's an insincere San Franciscan who flirts with Heath instead.

And big brother Heath gets socked by his misunderstanding big brother in the interim.

Big deal!: let's have more neato action, Jackson! This junk was the kind of tosh which made 9 year old boys more interested in eating their tootsie rolls instead of looking at the screen in movie theatres....

At fifty, i am still that kid in many ways, apparently.

Oh,well: so i'm young-at-heart...gonna write Lee Majors a fan letter!

An episode you knew the outcome at the beginning of the show
kfo949413 September 2012
This episode begins as Nick, which has been in San Francisco for only five days, comes walking in the house introducing everyone to his new fiancée Hester. Everyone seems happy other than Victoria. She seems to sense something about Hester that is not quite correct.

Hester is a society gal that loves being cared for by many suitors. When she agrees to stay with the Barkley's for a few days she gets introduced to living outside the lights and activities of San Francisco. And when Hester seems to be favoring Heath over Nick, things get a bit edgy.

During the night Hester is seen by Heath crying. When Heath tries to console Hester, it is seen by Nick. Nick starts a fight that ends when he is knocked off a hill and lands on a large rock. Nick's back could be broken.

Nick needs a doctor and it will take an all out effort to get him back to the ranch. And during this ordeal we will learn if Hester decides to stay with Nick or move on with her life.

There just did not seem to be any chemistry going on in the episode. Things seem to go by slow with best part of the entire episode is the last two minutes.

Nick needs to switch to decaf.
qormi8 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Nick is slightly jealous... he thought Heath got rough with his finance and promptly beat him down and tried with all his might to strangle the life out if him. Smart of his fiancé to move on after that. Could you imagine being married to that violent dude? It would be like... " You call these scrambled eggs???" Then he'll throw the plate at her, tackle her, and kick her in the head.

Nick tries to kill Heath and Diane Baker is miscast
LukeCoolHand17 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Where do i begin ??

First - Diane Baker is miscast. She does not look or act like a saloon girl or man chaser at all. Someone like Karen Sharpe, Lynn Loring, or Patricia Barry would have been a much better choice. Baker looks too much like that sweet girl next door.

2nd - Nick thinks Heath is going after his new fiancé(Baker) so naturally he tries to kill his own brother Heath by strangling him to death..

3rd - Heath hurts his back fighting Heath and Baker picks when Nick is strapped down and can't move to tell him she is going to leave him. WOW

I have not seen every BV episode but one would have to go pretty far to out gobble this turkey.

Victoria Barkley's story
uespenny6 September 2018
Victoria tells a story of a past experience when she was pregnant with Nick and speaks of Heath being sick with pneumonia as a child. What? Heath came into their lives as an adult. Would love an explanation for this.
