The Trouble With an Ugly Lamp
JordanThomasHall21 November 2018
Dagwood and Blondie are celebrating their anniversary. The Dithers gift them a lamp so ugly Blondie doesn't even want it in the house. Dagwood returns it at Willoughbys, the department store it came from. The Dithers change their mind and decide to attend their anniversary dinner that night. Dagwood gets the lamp back, which had been selling after giving Salesman Mr. Wilson (Fritz Feld) the idea to market it as an "enemy gift". Cookie and Alexander see the lamp and think their parents were too busy to return it. Meanwhile, Blondie, Dagwood, and Herb all place one there to cover the original and the kids take them away, confused. Blondie has them bring the lamp back, but now there are multiple ones they must hide from the Dithers who has arrived.

The lamp that multiplied!

It's the Bumstead's anniversary and Mr. Dithers gives them a present. It turns out to be one of the ugliest lamps on the planet...sort of like something Dr. Seuss threw up! Not surprisingly, they hate it and decide to return it to the store for credit. But when the Dithers' change their mind and come to dinner, they rush to get the lamp back so as not to offend them. The problem is that Dagwood, Blondie AND Herb all come back with the same lamp! What to do, what to do?

This is a pretty unremarkable but satisfying episode of the series. Solid but also nothing you will particularly remember (aside from the ugly lamp) or be impressed by after you see it.

THE BUMSTEADS VS. A CRUMMY LAMP
tcchelsey12 February 2023
This episode is quite similar to the wild antics of the old Blondie movie series as the Bumstead household is turned upside down with the entrance of a goofy looking lamp. It's a wedding anniversary gift from Mr. And Mrs. Dithers so bad that Blondie doesn't even want it in the house! Now what? There's a lot of confusion at play here, which the original movie series thrived on, and this episode runs fast. Star of the show is the unforgettable Fritz Feld as a store salesman. Feld made a career out of playing eccentric, yet distinguished characters, often with his trademark "mouth popping" hello or goodbye. One thing to note, is that Blondie and Dagwood had a beautiful house, even by today's standards. Accolades to the set decorators! The house in the movie series, if you can recall, was typical low budget interior decorating, 1940s style! Not much to write home about. Again, a salute to Elivia Allman as Mrs. Dithers, one of the best character actresses on tv. Now on dvd.
