Candy has his chance at love in this episode as a starving girl, Laura, comes into town looking for work. His interest in her is returned and we watch some development of their relationship. But, the man following her from her last town turns up to blackmail her, wanting her to marry Little Joe instead, for his money.
She tries to fake love interest in Little Joe, but it doesn't go well, just leads to Candy and Little Joe having a fight.
SPOILER: She confesses to Candy that she does love him, but she killed a man in her prior town when he attacked her. She ran because the only witness just wants to blackmail her and he, Marshal, has showed up here, in Virginia City. Candy leaves to explain this to the Cartwrights, in the meantime Marshal saw Laura with Candy and they start fighting, eventually struggling over a gun that fires.
Candy is just another Cartwright because his love interests never work out. I suspect Candy, David Canary, had much better luck on his soap,All My Children (1970), but I'm not sure since I've never watched that. ;-)
