Very well done

As it often happens on Bonanza, Ben gets involved in a struggle between right and wrong. Often, the topics are about social justice, races and genders and ethnicity, and it sometimes gets weird and muddy. This show was about plain and simple corruption, and it worked out very well. Couple other comments: 1) It was a nice change not to have to see little Joe much. 2) I DID miss not seeing Hop Sing 3) Why is Simon Oakland playing only the sinister roles?

Excellent ep about county corruption and the power of small time press

Warning: Spoilers
Ben goes to a town to auction off horse and gets involved with lady friend running a newspaper to the chagrin of a corrupt judge. Simon Oakland is out and out excellent as the corrupt judge. But Phyllis Thaxter with her very pretty face makes the show's best guest star as the newspaper owner.

A nice first half that was lost by the end of the episode.

Ben Cartwright gets involved with an old friend named Ruth Manning that owns a newspaper in the town of Gunlock. Ben is actually there to sell some horses but goes to visit Ruth that is having a hard time with the local Judge that wants to buy the paper. In fact when Ben arrives, the Judge's two thugs are manhandling Ruth and her printer. But when it goes to court, of course the Judge sides with the two thugs.

It is not long before Ruth has taken all she can bear. She agrees to let Ben sale the newspaper to Judge Tabor (Simon Oakland). But since Judge Tabor has already ticked Ben off, it will be Ben Cartwright that actually buys the newspaper. And as you can guess Judge Tabor will not stand quietly with Ben as editor of the paper.

This actually was an interesting story but it seemed that the writers did not have an end to the story. It appears that time was running out and 'like magic' abracadabra its over. For such an nice first half, the second half of the episode just did not deliver enough interest. Could have been so much better.
