Chicken run in the west
bkoganbing4 November 2020
Under the wise parenting of Ben Cartwright one would expect Little Joe not to get trapped in a stupid game of machismo as demonstrated here. Michael Landon gets goaded into a fight with veteran gunslinger George Montgomery. Goosing up the tension with his bookmaking operation is a slimy character played by Robert Ellenstein.

This is a theme in several westerns on both the big and small screen. The western A Gunfight with Kirk Douglas and Johnny Cash probably expresses what the Montgomery character is feeling.

Montgomery has some good scenes with saloon girl Joan Staley. It's like he is running on empty the way that Gregory Peck was in The Gunfighter.

Good guest star turns from Montgomery, Ellenstein and Staley.

Mediocre episode that started out with a bang

This episode started out pretty good but then started to fall flat. The last half was just a lot of talk about whether Joe was going fight the man in a gunfight. The whole episode could have been condensed to 30 minutes because there was just not enough substance there.

Classic tale falls out of character.

Despite some solid performances especially from Michael Landon and George Montgomery, this episode was out of sync with the series. Gunfight challenges in the day were not that common, and not treated lightly. To have a challenge over a difference of words with two sober parties where there was no fight over a girl, or land seems suspicious. Add in a third stranger fueling the conflict with his bets, and it becomes even more clear there is something rotten here. As an intelligent and caring father, Ben would of been with the Sheriff that very afternoon at the telegraph office sending out the description of the pair and the big fight would of never happened. But then again, neither would have the nice little aging gunfighter story.
