This Bonanza story concerns yet another old friend from Lorne Greene's past and he's got a lot to explain about John Vernon. These two go back to the Mexican War.
Vernon's a guy who to put it most charitably is rough around the edges. He gets on the wrong side of one Cartwright when he steals Michael Landon's pinto horse, maybe the most known horse in the territory. Then when David Canary confronts him, Vernon sucker punches Candy. Good thing he tried nothing with Dan Blocker. Imagine everyone's surprise when they find out he's got considerable history with Ben Cartwright.
He's got $500.00 and he wants to buy cattle from the Ponderosa to start his own spread. How he got it and why he finds so many old friends nicely settled while he's out hellraising is the rest of the story for you to see.
There's another element in this story that didn't really ring true. Vernon's getting involved with saloon girl Melissa Murphy who has some issues. It looks like she's trying for a father figure instead of a husband.
Not one of the better Bonanza because things really aren't resolved at the end of it.
