- Marcia breaks a date with Charlie when "big man on campus" Doug Simpson asks her out. However, after she gets hit in the nose with a football, Doug Simpson breaks his date with her.
- Marcia is in seventh heaven when the school's star football player, Doug Simpson, asks her out for a date for this Saturday. After she accepts, she remembers that she already has a date for Saturday night with a nice but somewhat plain boy named Charley, who adores her. As she would rather go out with Doug, she uses the advice given to her by Greg. He says that to get out of a date, she should use the non-committal statement, "something suddenly came up", which is what she tells a dejected but understanding Charley. She's happy that she managed not to hurt Charley and keep her date with Doug, but she still feels terrible doing it. A few days before the date, Marcia gets hit in the face by an errant football, badly injuring her nose. Marcia tries to avoid Doug before Saturday, but if she does see him, she hopes he will be understanding of her less than perfect looks and that she won't hear the words "something suddenly came up" from him. Meanwhile, Mike and Carol can't agree on which wallpaper to use for their bedroom.—Huggo
- Remember the time when Marcia cried out, "Ooh, my nose!"? It all began when Marcia set up a dance date with nice guy Charley, then dumped him for school hunk Doug Simpson (with the line "Something suddenly came up"). Then, Peter fires an errant pass, which hits Marcia flush in the face, causing her to utter her famous line. But a swollen nose is the least of Marcia's concerns; what will she tell Doug ... and Charley?—Brian Rathjen <briguy_52732@yahoo.com>
- Marcia is asked out by school hunk Doug Simpson (Nicholas Hammond), so she breaks her date with Charley (Stewart Goetz), the nice but unspectacular son of a wallpaper salesman, using the non-committal excuse Greg (Barry Williams) suggested, "Something suddenly came up." When Peter's (Christopher Knights) wildly thrown football hits Marcia's nose, causing it to swell and bruise, she tries to hide it from Doug at school, but fails. When Doug notices, he breaks their date with the ubiquitous excuse, "something suddenly came up."
Now Marcia is potentially without any date for Saturday night... unless she can find a way to explain to Charley that she wasn't exactly honest with him, and that she canceled for her dream of having a date with the perfect hunk. Both Mike (Robert Reed) and Carol (Florence Henderson) make sure Marcia understands just that. "I think your problem isn't a swollen noise. It's a bruised conscience."
Meanwhile, Mike and Carol redecorate and can't decide on a wallpaper pattern for their bedroom.
When Marcia's nose quickly heals, Doug asks her out again. This time, Marcia rejects him before admitting to Charley what she did; thankfully, Charley is understanding and forgives her. This time, Marcia hopes that their date is still on, and Charley says it is; she goes on the date with him. Marcia reveals that during the date Doug showed up unexpectedly and proceeded to tease her. Charley defended Marcia, and the two boys got into a physical fight, that ended with Charley belting Doug, giving him a swollen nose.
