- President Grant gives McCord an important mission in Mexico. The mission is highly secret, and when over, will deem him both a coward and a traitor. Jason takes the job, but soon learns the mission will be much more difficult than he thought.—Michelle
- In the voice of Jason McCord:
President Grant had a special assignment for me. It was a mission that had to be done by someone who would have a reason to hate the United States government, and I had every reason to do so. The President told me about a problem they were having with a raiding party down by the Mexican border. They would tome into the United States, raid the army, then go back across the border. The United States Government could do nothing about it, and the Mexican Government had more important matters to worry about. The President suspected there were so pretty influential people involved in these raids. So, he wanted me to go to Mexico, gain their confidence, and them them to do an attack on Fort Perry. Colonel Snow would be my contact. He'd be the only one who knew the truth. I agreed to do it, knowing it would do nothing to clear my name as a coward. Before I left, I went to say goodbye to my grandfather. He wished me luck for my job...whatever it was.
It sure didn't take me very long to find the trouble I was looking for. Two men came up to me just as I rode into town to let me know strangers were not welcome there. They one named Crispo ordered me to go to another town. I walked into the saloon and ordered a drink. These two men started hassling me, stole my saddle bag. I pulled my saber on them and ordered they put my saddle bag back. I wanted to speak to the head man, and I KNEW Crispo wasn't it! I held a gun and my saber on him and ordered him to let me see the head man. His friend hit me from behind and knocked me out cold.
When I came to, I talked to a man higher up then Crispo, but he still wasn't the man I wanted. I told him I could be of great benefit on their raids. Anyone could figure out where the next raid was, and I had inside information because I knew the forts inside and out. I then got to talk to General Arriola. I told him I had some good advice to offer: change the attack, move in an unexpected direction. I suggested he attack Fort Perry because there was a large shipment of silver being held over for one day there. I told him he needed me because I knew that Fort. If we could enter it dressed as soldiers, we could take it without firing a shot. It would take just a few chosen words, and it would take an army man to know them and to use them.
I was put to work training some men so they would act like American soldiers. Crispo wasn't too happy with me bossing him around. The women were working on the army uniforms. Everything had to be ready by tomorrow - that's when the shipment was due in at Fort Perry. That night, Brissac came in to go over the plan with me. We would ride in as if we had been attacked by bandits. The soldiers in the Fort would give chase to the bandits, leaving us in the Fort to rob it. While we were discussing our plans, the men started making a lot of noise. We went down to see what the trouble was and Crispo and his men were waving around real army uniforms. They had killed some soldiers who had gotten too close to the border. Brissac gave me one of the Colonel uniforms. I was horrified to see the name stitched inside: Colonel Harry S. Snow! Well, I guess the coded message I had been writing wouldn't get me anywhere now. I burned it.
The next morning, we headed out for Fort Perry. Before leaving, Brissac promised Crispo that when the raid was over, he could kill me.
